Sadly, Ariana Franklin is no longer with us, having passed away in 2011, but her last book is going to be, thanks to her daughter Samantha.

Winter Siege, to be published in October by Bantam, is the stand-alone historical thriller left unfinished on her untimely death and now completed by Samantha Norman, daughter of Barry and Diana (aka Ariana) Norman and is set in 1141 at the time when Stephen and Matilda were tearing England apart to secure the crown following the death of Henry I. I do hope this will be purchased by the Ipswich Library.

Very well written and enjoyable, with lots of period details and a good plot. The audiobook is very well read.

This historical mystery set in the 12th century in Europe. It is the fourth in a series about a medical doctor, Adelia Agular and her Saracen assistant, Mansur. In this novel King Henry II asks Adelia to accompany his10-year-old daughter Joanna to Palermo to marry the King of Sicily. To make sure that Adelia returns to England, Henry II keeps Adelia’s daughter Allie at his court. Deaths begin to happen along the procession to Sicily and many in the group are blaming Adelia and are stating that she is a witch. Adelia finally discovers that Scarry is after her. She killed his lover Wolf in a previous novel. Adelia does not know the true identity of her killer as his face was covered when
she killed Wolf. Lots of period details and twists and turns in the plot. A fast paced and enjoyable historical mystery.

Disappointment alert!!! I am not talking about the quality of this novel, my dissappointment pertains to the content. Let me explain. I am a great fan of the "Mistress in the Art of Death" series and the last book "Murderous Procession" ended with a cliffhanger. I was hoping for the next book in the series but this is not it. This is "Murderous Procession". After a little bit of research on the web I was able to determine that all the books in this series (except the first) have a different title in the U.K. If you have read Murderous procession, you have read this book. Sorry!
****I am adding some sad news that I just have learned--Ariana Franklin (the author of this wonderful series) died on January 28 2011. See www.arianafranklin.com

Love this series! Can't get enough! Fabulous in every sense. Do not miss these books if you like medieval/Crusades-era historical fiction.

Ariana Franklin's latest Mistress of the Art of Death novel and a great read! Adelia accompanies Princess Joanna on her marriage procession to Sicily. Big climax in Palermo. Can't wait till she writes the next one.

Very enjoyable historical murder mystery - engaging characters and story. The series benefits from the travel element of the story - France and Italy being contrasted with England.
