One choice can transform you -- or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves -- and herself -- while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love. Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable -- and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so. - Jacket flap. The second installment in the Divergent series picks up right where the first book left off. Tris and Tobias go to the Amity compound to recover from the simulation attack on the Abnegation. When the Erudite and Dauntless traitors arrive to look for them though, the couple narrowly escapes and returns to the city. However, Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite leader, intends to eliminate all Divergent and control the rest of the population. While Tris and Tobias try to find allies to stop the Erudite, they still struggle with grief over what happened and at the same time wonder who they can trust. Will they be able to thwart Jeanine’s plans? What will be the cost they have to pay if they succeed?

I decided to read Insurgent before the movie goes out, and I was certainly not disappointed. This action-packed sequel to Divergent was an entertaining read. In fact, I had trouble putting it down. Surprising alliances and betrayals made for great suspense. In addition, the main characters are believable in spite of the extreme circumstances they find themselves in, especially Tris, a complex and flawed teenager. I must admit though that the trust issues between Tris and Tobias were getting a bit tiring after a while. However, the ending certainly makes you want to know what happens next, and I can’t wait to read the third book in the series.

I didn't find this as riveting as the first book in the series, but still a good read.

After enjoying Divergent, then watching the movie, I finally decided to continue the series with Insurgent. And I'm glad I did! The novels resumes minutes after Divergent ends (which, given it's been 15 months since I read the first book in the series, threw me at first). There's less backstory and world-building to do, so it seemed more action-oriented.

I continued to enjoy Tris' perspective and personality. She's reckless, selfless, still trying to prove herself (er, to herself), smart, analytical, and believably, beautifully flawed. Her relationship with everyone suffers in realistic ways, based on her decisions and actions (both in the first book and in this one), and I lovelovelove when an author addresses consequences.

My only problem with the book is the major reveal. No spoilers, and all that, but it's not anything original, and we all saw it coming chapters before it happened. It also relies on fake science (that genetics dictate personality) which pretty much undermines the entire faction system (where environment dictates personality). So it felt disjointed to me, in that sense. But then the action continues and there's still forward momentum and resolutions to be obtained.

Overall, this was a great sequel to Divergent, and has me reaching for the third book (Allegiant). I recommend it for fans of the first book, and I recommend the series for fans of dystopian YA, believably flawed and strong female protagonists, and interesting world-building. Also, if you live in Chicago you'll probably enjoy the nods to familiar landmarks (which had me looking at Google Maps a lot).

This was my favorite of the series. I'm an angsty person sometimes. Its probably why I'm so obsessed with Persuasion.

This book is just as amazing as the first one; as Tris and her friends hide out in Amity headquarters with Johanna Reyes, hiding from the Dauntless who have come to kill the Divergent. This book is amazing, I am proud to have it on my shelf.

On the floor, Eric moans. Still alive, for now. The gunshots gradually stop. My hand is wet. One glimpse of red tells me it's covered in blood-- Eric's. I wipe it off on my pants and try to blink the tears away. My ears ring. "Tris," Tobias says. "You can put the knife down."

“So, the thing we’re all not talking about,” he says. He gestures to me. “You almost died, a sadistic pansycake saved you, and now we’re all waging some serious war with the factionless as allies.”
“Pansycake?” says Christina.
“Dauntless slang.” Lynn smirks. “Supposed to be a huge insult, only no one uses it anymore.”
“Because it’s so offensive,” says Uriah, nodding.
“No. Because it’s so stupid no Dauntless with any sense would speak it, let alone think it. Pansycake. What are you, twelve?”
“And a half,” he says.

"Got that gun?" Peter says to Tobias.
"No," says Tobias, "I figured I would shoot the bullets out of my nostrils, so I left it upstairs."
"Oh, shut up."

When I walk back into Tobias's room, Uriah is sprawled across the bed facedown; Christina is holding the blue sculpture above Tobias's desk, examining it; and Lynn is poised above Uriah with a pillow, a wicked grin creeping across her face. Lynn smacks Uriah hard in the back of the head, Christina says, "Hey Tris!" and Uriah cries, "Ow! How on earth do you make a PILLOW hurt, Lynn?"

Background info about Divergent: It's all about the Erudite wanting to controll the Dauntless people to attack the Abnegation.
Now in Insurgent, Tris, Tobias and others of the Abnegations went to Amity headcorters to seek shelter. The Erudite found out and everyone had to run again. Then one night out of no where two of Tris's friends were being controlled and jumped off the building threatening that if one divergent person is not in the Erudite headcorters by__ this would happen again.
Basically, it is a fast pace book with people on the edge of their chairs waiting for what is to come in this book.
