I cannot emphasize how much I dislike this book. As an ardent fan of Neil Gaiman, I wanted to like this book and in fact I enjoyed this book thoroughly until the finale. The finale was a betrayal of the previous parts of the story, it undercut everything established in the chapters leading up to said finale. I gave the book away. I don't enjoy talking about it. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. And yes, I understand that this is a parallel to the Jungle Book and the finale of the Jungle Book. The Jungle Book made it work, the Graveyard Book fell flat. Walk past and don't make eye contact.

Not up to Gaiman's usual level of excellence. The plot becomes rather plodding and the characters less than compelling. This was originally a novella and probably should have remained so.

Didn't have a chance to read this. Going to read the graphic novel series as it's being published now.

I think that there are a lot of implications within the book. I have drawn a parallel to the relationship shared by Jack and the baby as a similar relationship to the one shared between Voldemort and Harry Potter.

This story is about a boy raised by ghosts and supernatural guardians, kept safe inside a graveyard. It appears to be a creepy story about an unusual childhood, but it contains universal themes and lessons about growing up that applies to all of us.

I love Neil Gaiman's work and this novel pulled me right through. That being said, those indicating this is suitable for all ages are wrong - this is definitely not for younger children. It begins with parents and an older sibling being murdered in their beds, in their own home. This scene is not shown, only alluded to, but could still be enough to give kids nightmares and make them feel unsafe in their own homes for God knows how long... Then, too, there were scenes that were extremely anxiety-producing for me - and I'm in my 40s! Excellent work from an excellent writer. The only unsatisfying thing for me was that I never did really understand why Bod was targeted by the Jacks. The reason wasn't made clear. Didn't bother me too much, though - I just really enjoyed the ride.

At the best of times his face was unreadable. Now his face was a book written in a language long forgotten, in an alphabet unimagined. Silas wrapped the shadows around him like a blanket, and stared after the way the boy had gone, and did not move to follow.

Quotes From The Graveyard Book

"There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife. The knife had a handle of polished black bone and a blade finer and sharper than any razor...if it sliced you, you might not even know that you had been cut - not immediately.

The knife had done almost everything it was brought to the house to do and both the blade and the handle were wet... "

“I wanted to keep you perfectly safe,” said Silas. “But there is only one perfectly safe place for your kind and you will not reach it until all your adventures are over and none of them matter any longer.”
