12 Years A Slave
Based on the true story of Solomon Northup. It is 1841, and Northup, an accomplished, free citizen of New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Stripped of his identity and deprived of all dignity, Northup is ultimately purchased by ruthless plantation owner Edwin Epps and must find the strength within to survive. Filled with powerful performances by an astonishing cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave is both an unflinching account of slavery in American history and a celebration of the indomitable power of hope.

Watchable but the torture scenes were too graphic.

This is an excellent film. It really creates a deep impression and a strong feeling in my mind. It transmits a strong warning to the violence happened / is still happening on the world - human trafficking. This evil must be condemned and stopped.

A true story in which Dick Cheneny's family played a piviltol role. It turns-out that the Cheneys are murderous bitches. These mass-murderers that need exceptional scrutiny as they are guilty of sodomy, rape, other unspecified homosexual horrors.

Ejiofor, Woodard and Cumberbatch--how could this not be a 7 star movie? It just didn't work--and I don't know why. It was painful to watch, and the story was good, but the movie was just not done well.

Good movie, painful to watch at times due to the brutality carried out on slaves in the mid 1800's that is portrayed in the movie. Good acting.

Based on a true account, this film is very disturbing and left me with an angry, frustrated feeling.Excellent acting overall. Although the ending shows some progress, with respect to freedom from slavery, the story leading up to it is frightening and very sad. It is just unbelievable what black people had to endure during this difficult part of history, which exposes America's shameful past.

A very sad story with a happy ending. Makes you appreciate your freedom to come and go as one pleases.

I stayed away from this movie for a while because of its reported violence. But I ended up picking it up, and instead saw a beautifully made film that depicts the Old South as it was, and the tragedy that was the barbaric custom of slavery. Highly recommended.

This film was well done, and the difficult subject matter to portray on film was successful due to the great acting cast and director. I did not read the book, but other nonfiction books I have read on this subject matter makes this movie authentic but a lighter version of slavery; yet, appropriate enough for a mass audience of adults. (I saw this film first in the movie theater, and I am glad that the library carries it in DVD form.) I wondered if Chiwetel would have had several martial art blackbelt degrees, if he would have become enslaved--I found this film taught the importance of self-defense such as martial arts. The disgusting nature of slavery does come out in this excellent film.

from IMDb: Bass: The law says you have the right to hold a xyzger, but begging the law's pardon... it lies. Is everything right because the law allows it? Suppose they'd pass a law taking away your liberty and making you a slave?

Edwin Epps: Ha!

Bass: Suppose!

Edwin Epps: That ain't a supposable case.

Bass: Because the law states that your liberties are undeniable? Because society deems it so? Laws change. Social systems crumble. Universal truths are constant. It is a fact, it is a plain fact that what is true and right is true and right for all. White and black alike.
