Based on the true story of Solomon Northup. It is 1841, and Northup, an accomplished, free citizen of New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Stripped of his identity and deprived of all dignity, Northup is ultimately purchased by ruthless plantation owner Edwin Epps and must find the strength within to survive. Filled with powerful performances by an astonishing cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave is both an unflinching account of slavery in American history and a celebration of the indomitable power of hope.

Having just finished reading the book, I was all too aware of the changes made for this film adaptation. I prefer Northup’s written account.

A powerful and moving film. Highly recommend. Realistically demonstrates the potential depravity of man.

It's not too often that such a beautifully shot movie is also full of painfully brutal and barbaric situations as this one is. And I assume that all of what I'm seen in this movie is true?? Mankind just knows so many ways to be cruel to itself and to people who should be considered and valued instead of dehumanized and abused.

The cinematography and acting were very good, but the movie was difficult to sit through because it was so focused on suffering. Some of the characters were portrayed in a way that was inconsistent with the book, they were made out to be unrealistically sadistic and evil. The movie was overly agenda-driven. Since we already know slavery was morally wrong, what's the point of beating it into our heads over and over again? None of my ancestors ever owned slaves, so am I still supposed to feel 'white guilt' because of the color of my skin? This shouldn't have won "Best Picture" or "Best Adapted Screenplay" although Lupita Nyong'o was very good and deserved her Oscar for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role".

I rate this movie very high because to me it was highly emotionally involving and played upon a vast variety of emotions without my feeling guided or played.

It was very disconcerting to see the switch of his lifestyle from one of freedom, respect and a good life to the exact opposite.

At the end his bewildered and traumatized face said so much. This trauma could be related to a lot of human tragedy aside from slavery and racism. We are all vulnerable - we all are tested and at times fail the test of life.

An amazing movie. The story is good but the filming and all the techniques are incredible. Glad I watched it at home because some of the film is honest and graphic. Not a good film for the under 12 years group. Parent would have to do a lot of explaining about some of the scenes. All the Oscar awards were honestly received.

the book the film is based on is a gem- written in the 19th century but straightforward and free of excess wordiness. the film,on the other hand is totally inept. one example - in the book the master makes use of Patsy when he pleases and punishes her if she doesn't co-operate. when the master is away, the wife takes out her jealousy and frustration by punishing Patsy unendingly - the movie, however , decides the wife must confront her husband and make dramatic issue out of it - completely misunderstanding the dynamics and registering as inauthentic and very 20th century.
And the husband sneaks off to Patsy under cover of darkness - not in the blatant and uncaring manner described in the book. This movie was rewarded for being right-minded, not for being an example of good film-making. A dark, ugly and narratively confusing mess.

This has to be the best and most realistic film about slavery in America. It would take Steve McQueen, a black man from the UK to produce and direct it. That says a lot about Hollywood, where for numerous years they either had blacks played by whites with blackface or they portrayed blacks as bumbling idiots. Sorry, Congresswoman Bachmann, slavery in America was not ended by America’s founding fathers as you so stupidly assert. This film deserves every award that it has received. And thank you Brad Pitt for having the wisdom and courage to help get this film made.

A sad story that needed to be told. As a movie however, I thought the ending was abrupt and incomplete. Solomon Northrup's story has so much more to it afterwards, that showing more of it would have given this Film much more balance and perspective.

from IMDb: Bass: The law says you have the right to hold a xyzger, but begging the law's pardon... it lies. Is everything right because the law allows it? Suppose they'd pass a law taking away your liberty and making you a slave?

Edwin Epps: Ha!

Bass: Suppose!

Edwin Epps: That ain't a supposable case.

Bass: Because the law states that your liberties are undeniable? Because society deems it so? Laws change. Social systems crumble. Universal truths are constant. It is a fact, it is a plain fact that what is true and right is true and right for all. White and black alike.
