This has to be the best and most realistic film about slavery in America. It would take Steve McQueen, a black man from the UK to produce and direct it. That says a lot about Hollywood, where for numerous years they either had blacks played by whites with blackface or they portrayed blacks as bumbling idiots. Sorry, Congresswoman Bachmann, slavery in America was not ended by America’s founding fathers as you so stupidly assert. This film deserves every award that it has received. And thank you Brad Pitt for having the wisdom and courage to help get this film made.

A sad story that needed to be told. As a movie however, I thought the ending was abrupt and incomplete. Solomon Northrup's story has so much more to it afterwards, that showing more of it would have given this Film much more balance and perspective.

I was upset when 12 Years a Slave won an Oscar for best picture, which Gravity should’ve won, since 12 Years a Slave won 3 out of 9 Oscar nominations. The film is lengthy and it did somewhat lose me about halfway/three-fourths of the way win but when it had me it had me by the balls. At its best this film is amazing providing one of the most engaging, emotional, and powerful films to come out this year. This movie is a must watch for any film buff. Filmmaking can be an art and with some excellent cinematography you can create some powerful moments and this film does that. Chiwetel Ejiofor is so impressive in this incredibly intense, visceral film. (When it ended, nobody in my theater moved for a period of time, and there was no round of applause mostly, it seemed, because of the shock of it all. Clapping didn’t seem like the right thing to do.) The fact that we experience the story from the perspective of a kidnapped free man makes the film instantly relatable. I was so happy to have watched all of Tom Fontana’s excellent “Copper” which features an African American civil war veteran doctor living in New York, and all of his family’s struggles in Five Points. Solomon, a New Yorker kidnapped from Washington DC, could be any of us. The Southern landscape as it likely existed in those days provides such a beautiful-yet- eerie backdrop to this movie. What I particularly appreciate the fact that all the shots are confined you never see very far into the distance. Therefore, this is why I hate and like this film for significant reasons.

I think the point is that slavery is bad. Other than the fact that it is based on a true story (or, perhaps, because of it), this is unrelievedly dark, and it's hard to see why it got such raves.

I thought the acting was good in this movie but to me the story was depressing. Focussed mainly on how some human beings can be so cruel to another human being just because of his race or colour.

I don't know why, but of all the graphic scenes of violence that was committed in this movie, the one that had me in tears was the scene where Patsey(Lupita Nyong'o) was savagely beaten. Maybe, it's because she's a woman. Not that a mans suffering is any less than a womans. Especially in a movie that deals with the horrors and injustices of slavery. But, that scene was still hard to watch. All the actors and the director did a fantastic job.

"Essie Mae Washington-Williams lived for 87 years. But, in her own words, she was never “completely free” until she could stand before the world and say out loud that Strom Thurmond, the one-time segregationist South Carolina senator, was her father." (Washington Post, 02/05/13)
The 'Rule of Law' is still unequally applied in many hearts, minds and geographic locations today and although not entertaining, we need to be educated and/or graphically reminded from time to time what life is like with and without United States 'Rule of Law' equally applied without regard to religion (Jews as in "The Counterfeiters",) gender (Women as in "Color Purple"), and many other forms of slavery today. This movie is well worth the time of anyone 13 and older.

This is why I hate those who want to fly the confederate flag. They don't have a clue. GREAT movie with truth.

This copy of the DVD 12 Years A Slave was received damaged and unwatchable.

I am very glad that I saw this movie, but with that said, it was an average movie, not great. The scenes were disturbing in it's cruelty and injustice.

from IMDb: Bass: The law says you have the right to hold a xyzger, but begging the law's pardon... it lies. Is everything right because the law allows it? Suppose they'd pass a law taking away your liberty and making you a slave?

Edwin Epps: Ha!

Bass: Suppose!

Edwin Epps: That ain't a supposable case.

Bass: Because the law states that your liberties are undeniable? Because society deems it so? Laws change. Social systems crumble. Universal truths are constant. It is a fact, it is a plain fact that what is true and right is true and right for all. White and black alike.
