Really found this to be a thought provoking and absorbing story, with a credible cast of characters. Your emotions are with the title character as he suffers his ordeal of being unjustly imprisoned for 20 years, while life goes on without him. You also revel in his quest for revenge and to find out the reason he was in fact confined for such a long time. At the conclusion when the answers are revealed, it's a shocking plot twist, that leaves the viewer dumbfounded. Yes the film has violence but as opposed to just centralizing this movie to merely the fact that people are killed and brutalized in almost intense fashion, pay in mind that there's an amount of thought as to the motivation of the central character's revenge filled quest. Of interest to those who may have seen the original Korean version. A standout performance by Josh Brolin.

A big dose of the old 'ultraviolence',.. but what I thought was going to be an absurd story,.. kept pulling me swiftly forward and deeeper down ! Spike Lee delivers, and the actors are more than incredible. Lucky for me that I hadn't seen the original, and was completely absorbed with this captivating suprise !

I think Josh Brolin is a wonderful actor. This movie is good, strange, violent, disturbing and unique. I enjoyed it! Four stars!

Things were going fine for the first hour. Then they got absurd with the fight scenes. Then they got weird. Really weird. The last 30 seconds make you say "Are you kidding me?".

Chaney (mob boss telling Joe): The last person

Now, compared
to what I'm about to do to you,
that was like an ant
xyzking an elephant.

Marie: How do you know that's not him? He seems happy.
Joe: The one who called me doesn't know what happy means.
