Watch an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man, who mentored Bruce Lee. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China's last dynasty, a time of chaos, division, and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts.

It's not documentary! A wonderful movie that people need time and understanding of the Director ~ Wong Kar Wai to enjoy.

Easily predictable, not historical, and the movie was more a documentary then a movie. It's good to finally meet the person that mentored Bruce Lee the great Martial Arts. I would recommend this movie to anyone that was or is still a Bruce Lee fan. Enjoy. I really admired Bruce Lee but can't say the same thing about this movie in that category.

The worst celluloid take or so-called take on Ip Man's life that i have ever seen period. The only reason i saw this one already on the big screen last year was because my movie ticket was paid for.I don't go to the movie theaters personally no more at all,and this movie is the perfect example of why i don't pay for movie tickets no more for exactly 10 years now and counting period. The only good films about Bruce Lee's alleged real life martial-arts trainer or mentor are the original ''Ip Man'' and ''Ip Man 2'' movies starring Donnie Yen.The totally unnecessary 2010 remake of the 1st Donnie Yen Classic i been skipping it on purpose.A Donnie Yen Lookalike plays Ip Man in that movie.Skipping it on purpose is exactly what everybody should do for ''The Grandmaster'' if you have been lucky enough or smart enough to have not seen this one yet so far period,BUT YOU DON'T HEAR ME THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have been Warned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Visually beautiful,.. but not narratively interesting. Not that 'historical'.

This DVD movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. Very predictable but still entertaining.

Before you watch this film, watch Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love or Chunking Express - then you'll understand his approach to the film. This is a wonderful fictionalized love story that uses the true story of Ip Man as the vehicle. It's not an action film per se. It's a very stylized account of the times around Ip Man, that interestingly shifts to the story of Gong Er and her relationship to her father and family name, and struggle with a gendered society. There are enough action flicks about Ip Man - this is VERY different.

A few masterfully choreographed fight scenes, beautifully filmed. Worth seeing but it's really a stylized fictional account, and the narration really serves only to hold the collection of scenes together, not always effectively.

If you're looking for an action flick that's filled with lots of martial art fighting, then you need to look elsewhere. This movie covers Ip Man's life experience through the harsh times. Wonderful performance delivered by Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang.
