Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. But Wanderer, the invading "soul" who occupies Melanie's body, finds its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Soon Wanderer and Melanie-reluctant allies-set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring one of the most unusual love triangles in literature, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the essence of what it means to be human.

Having heard enough about the Twilight series to know that I wanted to avoid them, I began Meyer's stand-alone novel with trepidation. It was a pleasant surprise. It's one of the best love stories I've read. OK, so it's told from the perspective of an extraterrestrial being who's basically a parasite, but she's a very sympathetic parasite. Meyer does what many fine science-fiction writers have done before her: show us what it means to be human.

This book was great, but the movie was only like 1% going along with the book. I wanted to scream throughout. So, I am reading this book again to get the movie out of my mind.

I really liked the concept of this book. It was refreshingly new, and there were twists throughout that weren't expected. I loved the idea of the caves, the souls, and the hosts. My only complaints are that the plot drags on at points, and (once again, as in Twilight) Stephanie Meyer's female leads are infuriatingly helpless and weak a majority of the time (although they did have some strong moments). Overall, a brilliant sci-fi read that was too interesting to put down.

The Beginning of this book is a long one with many details but DON'T PUT IT DOWN! PLEASE! It is honestly my favorite book! It has beautiful details and makes you connect with characters so well. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!

Honestly, after reading the first chapter I couldn't be bothered to continue.

This was an incredible book! I couldn't believe this was written by the same person who wrote Twilight. The writing style was so much better, If I hadn't known better I would have thought it written by someone else. I definitely recommend this book

Best book ever!!!! I could not put it down. It had me on the edge of my seat. I personally don't like twilight, but this book is so good!!!!!!!! :D

“You. Are. Not. Leaving. Me.” ~Ian

It's not the face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say. It's not how you look in that body but the things you do with it. YOU are beautiful.

I held you in my hands, Wanderer, and you were so beautiful.

"he ducked in and touched his lips to my forehead.
no one was more surprised than I, though I heard Jared gasp quietly. My mouth hung open as Ian wheeled and nearly sprinted from the room.
I heard Doc pull a breath in through his teeth, like a backward whistle. "Well," he said. "

In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.

After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.

As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.

Melanie "Mel" Stryder is one of few "wild" humans remaining on earth after invasion. After "insertion" into a human body, alien souls erase the human occupant and establish a claim over the body and mind. Wanderer is a soul who has lived on eight different planets previously, with Mel being her ninth host body. Upon waking inside her new body, Wanderer is shocked by the power and vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, and quickly learns that Melanie is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves, a human who still lives in hiding named Jared. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
