Tread lightly. You're in the cliche-ed land of Nicholas Sparks stories now. Star-crossed lovers with terminal illnesses is his bag. I'm sure you know him: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, A WALK TO REMEMBER, THE NOTEBOOK, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE, and so on and so forth. This SAFE HAVEN is a mere continuation of that. A young lady appears all of a sudden in a pokey little town, running away from something (details emerge as the story plods on), and happens upon a widower with two young kids who together run the gas station. She is standoffish but is urged by her neighbour to let him into her heart. All the while, she is being chased by an obsessive cop. Why? Well, the answer is no shocking surprise; it actually feels formulaic, as if generated by the Nick Sparks 3000. Plug stereotype A into situation B with conflict C to result in ... wuv. Very reminiscent of far superior Julia Roberts picture SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, I recommend you watch that instead of SAFE HAVEN.

Slow. Predictable. Pace picks up in last 30 minutes or so, and barely saves the film from a one star rating.

Great movie. You'll never guess the strange ending.

Safe Haven Summary:
Katie Feldman (Julianne Hough) is a young woman trying to run away from her haunting past. She escapes into a small town down in North Carolina. Katie gets off at a pit stop where she meets a little girl named Lexie and Lexie’s father Alex who owns this pit stop; turns out she becomes more than just a costumer to this family. She finds herself falling in love but eventually her past will come back to haunt her.

Review:
Lasse Hallstӧm (director of film) has definitely outdone himself with this one. Perfectly timed and beautifully set, watch as the Nicholas Sparks book comes to life. It is such a simple yet intense drama/mystery that will hook you from beginning till end.
Like all amazing mysteries, Katie’s past is shown throughout the film as she dreams or tells her story. Your perspective of Katie will change continuously. Hints drop to what actually was happening and you would not be able to understand until you have watched the whole movie. Guessing what was happening, you will definitely want to finish this movie. You will understand and enjoy this film very much.
If you love dramas, mystery and family type movies, this is highly recommended. It will give you different types of emotions and I have not exactly read the book, but the film is definitely worth watching even though everyone always says “books are always better”. Even though I did not get to read the book I know for a fact that this movie got everything down. I was never really interested in Nicholas sparks books until I watched this movie, I feel like I need to read his books just to see how amazing it was on pages like it was on screen.

basically just another version of "sleeping with the enemy". didn't seem to be a lot of chemistry between the 2 main characters and i couldnt really see a reason that they would fall in love with each other. oh well.
