While on the surface it may sound like techno-pop ear candy, appearances can be deceiving. Though this album sounds quite different from "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix", it's really just Phoenix doing what it has always done best - writing catchy yet quirky songs that fit in on the radio yet sound clearly unique, becoming hits while slyly refusing to conform to traditional pop themes and structures. That said, this isn't quite Phoenix at its best. "Bankrupt!" is not nearly as daring as their earlier, pre-"Wolfgang" work, and it focuses on texture over melody just enough to prevent any one song from really standing out. In the end, this probably won't be an album Phoenix will be remembered for. It's a good one though, and Phoenix fans will enjoy it.
