Add a CommentCharles Salzberg has done it again! I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed every breathless moment of it. Skip tracer Henry Swann has now become the cable guy, enduring seemingly endless flights of stairs, staggering heat, rebellious tempers and caustic remarks in his day-to-day activities. Suddenly, he receives a call from an old friend and is drawn back into the world of being a private investigator. Wealthy Carlton Phillips’ daughter, Marcy, is missing and he’s getting a little worried about her. Phillips will only reveal a few tantalizing clues, then he clams up, making Swann ponder the man’s real motives. Nevertheless, the gumshoe begins to run down the leads. Apparently, Marcy was pretty cozy with a brilliant student for life, one Sean Loomis. According to some, Loomis is a veritable genius and a true scholar. He adores old books and the stories behind them. Unfortunately, Sean also seems to have gotten himself into a few scrapes in the past, possessing a criminal history that may very well endanger Marcy. Suddenly, notes begin to show up, warning Swann to drop the case. His room is ransacked and street toughs corner him, trying to turn him from the investigation. Now, Swann is certain he’s onto something! Someone doesn’t want him digging any deeper and Swann wonders to what lengths the man – or woman – will go to stop him before he learns the truth. What a wonderful journey this was into the world of rare books! I also thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Salzberg’s vivid descriptions of New York City, its small town atmosphere among each borough and the flavors of each. Characterizations were outstanding. I really felt I got into these people’s heads and the ending leaves me wondering about the next adventure for Henry Swann. Such a masterful intertwining of humor, intelligence, and good old fashioned street smarts deserves another few novels, don’t you think? Until the next adventure . . .
