Beyond the steppes-tells the story of a woman's forced journey to the steppes of Central Asia. Nina, a young Polish woman, is deported with her baby by the Soviet Army in 1940, to the deep hostile lands of the USSR. She has to work in a sovkhoz under the control of the Russian political police. When her child becomes ill, she leaves on a search to find medications with a group of Kazakh nomads. The film draws the intimate and personal experience of this woman, as she's forced into exile, struggling against the extreme conditions of this inhuman land.

Reading the above comments, I have to say there were English subtitles on the copy I borrowed from the Vancouver library.

I tried hard to enjoy the movie, but it was always slightly off for me. Perhaps it was lacking the grittiness and needed more realism to fully engage me. Apart from the beautiful scenery of the steppes, the story and the acting could have been much better. Also, the film transfer was pretty terrible, with much waviness to the picture. Still a good watch, though,

no subtitles here either in the Chicago area.

no subtitles on my copy in Hamilton ON, very frustrating.

No, I couldn't bring up any English subtitles either -- no matter how many ways I tried.

This looks like it would be a great movie but I couldn't get the English Subtitles on, even after changing the screen size as the DVD says. My television is not HD, but I have a digital cable box. Would that have anything to do with it?
i'm curious to know if anyone else can get the subtitles turned on!
