Comment
Add a CommentAn honest look at himself. Admits he is not a saint...just a guy seeking the answers to the big questions, while also falling to the temptations all around him. Good insight for real Who fans.
Too long by 20%, but a straight-forward biography of one of the 20th century's music giants.
Pete Townshend says this book was reduced to just 500 pages from over the original 1000 or more. At times it gets muddled with the names of people who he worked with in the industry but it shows how many are involved with the big names. The sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll are all here but he tends to downplay the roll of the drugs and booze. He seems at times to mention his addictions as almost incidental to his work. One can only imagine the quality of work he may have produced if he didn't battle his demons. If anything the reader becomes aware of the price a person in his position gives up i.e. family life to pursue a dream. I would be interested to compare his bandmates bios of him. He did well to survive in a world where many of his compadres did not.
Very good read. Thankfully, "I hope I die before I get old" didn't work out ... Maybe about 50 pages too long, though.
Everyone who knows about Pete Townshend -- songwriter and guitarist for The Who -- knows he can write; his songs prove that, as does his fiction collection, "Horse's Neck." But can he write effectively and honestly about himself? "Who I Am" answers that question with a resounding yes. Townshend offers details about being born into a showbiz family, and also shares his feelings, which have been misunderstood at times, about the untimely deaths of Who drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle, who, until his passing in the early 2000s, had been Townshend's closest friend. Highly recommended.
