Disjointed at times and lacks the seamless quality of its predecessor.

it's a really good book, though I think it's related to the book Were the Mountain meets the moon...

"In this companion book to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, a boy named Rendi runs away from home and takes a job doing chores at an inn in a tiny village, where the moon has gone missing from the sky. Rendi is selfish, ornery, and unhappy, but when a glamorous storyteller arrives at the inn, her amazing tales (along with those of other guests at the inn, all of which are based on actual Chinese folklore) help him gather the courage to be a hero and return the moon to its rightful place. Readers who enjoy rich, beautiful language and gorgeously intricate illustrations will be swept away by this enchanting novel." Grace Lin truly has a gift for writing. All her books are simply amazing with a detailed and original plot!

Rendi is a stowaway on a wine merchant’s cart when he is discovered in the Village of Clear Sky by an inn keeper who takes him as a chore boy. Rendi is troubled by moaning and groaning sounds in the night and by the fact that the moon has disappeared. He is determined to get away from the inn and keep running but circumstances cause him to stay and stories told by a beautiful woman guest at the inn help Rendi realize what he must do to restore the moon, the village and himself. This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves fairy tales and is looking for something more. Reviewed by BPL volunteer EE.

I loved this book! The stories interwoven into the plot are elegant and beautiful. The book inspires a love for story telling and the magic it holds.

When an author for children is good from the get-go it can sound like a bit of backhanded praise to say that they’ve improved over the years. Ms. Lin has always been an accomplished author and her plots have certainly always worked. Yet with Starry River of the Sky she cranks up the quality an additional notch or two. Perfectly planned and wholly original, she delivers her best novel for kids yet. It just works.

This wasn’t part of the plan. Not the way he envisioned it, anyway. When Rendi hid in the wine merchant’s traveling cart he naturally assumed it would take him somewhere big and populated. The last thing he expected was to be dumped in the middle-of-nowhere Village of Clear Sky. Now a chore boy in the only inn in the vicinity, Rendi takes his frustrations out on the inhabitants. It isn’t until a mysterious and beautiful lady appears telling strange tales that he finds himself wrapped up in a mystery that may answer a twin problems: The location of the moon that disappeared several nights ago and the reason that only Rendi can hear unknown groans and moans on the night wind.
