In a rising Saudi Arabian city, far from weary, recession-scarred America, a struggling businessman pursues a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and finally do something great. In A Hologram for the King, Dave Eggers takes us around the world to show how one man fights to hold himself and his splintering family together in the face of the global economy’s gale-force winds. This taut, richly layered, and elegiac novel is a powerful evocation of our contemporary moment — and a moving story of how we got here.

Add a CommentMarvellous little book that documents the material and spiritual decline of 20th American business, and businessmen, and how it all ties in to a global marketplace which makes for the strangest of strange bedfellows. Truly a must-read.
Fast, entertaining read about the shift of power from the U.S. to the middle east
I nearly always enjoy Dave Eggers' writing, and this is no exception. That being said, I still believe his first book "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" is the one to beat. It's simply amazing. I've read it at least three times and love it each time.
My intro to eggers and most enjoyable - loved interactions with Yousef - only ok about world economy...
Good story - I enjoyed this.
I loved 'What's What', so I hoped to learn something new about Saudi Arabia through the protagonist's story. The book seemed more focused on his American life, a corporate 'Death of a Salesman', than on Saudi Arabia. My guess is that most readers will enjoy the story, but this was a wrong book for me.
While this book is not as griping as 'Zeitoun' or 'What is the What', Eggers is such an excellent writer this story of a man sliding into obscurity is a tale for the ages. The glimpse of Saudi Arabia and conditions there was very interesting as well.
