Item Details

Pepper is a rambunctious big man, and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He's not mentally ill, but that doesn't seem to matter. On his first night, he's visited by a terrifying creature who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It's no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl. Battling the pill-pushing staff, one another, and their own minds, they try to kill the monster that's stalking them. But can the Devil die?

This book is so boring that at about 100 pages in I was still reading in hopes that at any minute it was going to get better. It did not. It was as bland and non-eventful as the inside of the mental institution that served as the setting for the novel. I would not recommend this book. I feel like I wasted my time.

couldn't get into this book- & it wasn't for lack of trying. It is described as a contemporary version of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", but the style and writing was not nearly so captivating as OFOTCN.

Allegory: the whole country (in this case - the United States) - it's a hospital for mentally ill people, and nearly all the inhabitants of this country are influenced by psychopharmaceuticals, in order to be woozy. And which
they take without protest, so it's easier to live - without much thinking. This is the harsh reality: mentally ill people thrown out from society, why to treat them if there is no cure?
The image of the Devil ...
I do not know ... Fear has big eyes - for this I think it is present
in the book ...
Anyway, there's a feeling that something is missing in this book ...
