Catherine Bailey has been enjoying the single life long enough to know a catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic and spontaneous, Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.
But what begins as flattering attentiveness and passionate sex turns into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon learns there is a darker side to Lee. His increasingly erratic, controlling behaviour becomes frightening, but no one believes her when she shares her fears. Increasingly isolated and driven into the darkest corner of her world, a desperate Catherine plans a meticulous escape.
Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherine—now Cathy—compulsively checks the locks and doors in her apartment, trusting no one. But when an attractive upstairs neighbour, Stuart, comes into her life, Cathy dares to hope that happiness and love may still be possible . . . until she receives a phone call informing her of Lee’s impending release. Soon after, Cathy thinks she catches a glimpse of the former best friend who testified against her in the trial; she begins to return home to find objects subtly rearranged in her apartment, one of Lee’s old tricks. Convinced she is back in her former lover’s sights, Cathy prepares to wrestle with the demons of her past for the last time.
Utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, Into the Darkest corner is an ingeniously structured and plotted tour de force of suspense that marks the arrival of a major new talent.

Add a CommentVery detailed description of a struggle with OCD and PTSD. Overall I liked the book. Only the author disappointed me at the end, when she is describing a fight scene between the main characters, using all these typical adjectives, verbs - you can see the scenes from the movies of a similar genre that this book: "He grabbed my leg... I grabbed the knife...etc." Also very often this novel is very graphic in description of violence, sex, drugs and rock-and-roll.
This is a well-written psychological thriller that never has a dull moment. I finished the book realizing it was so much more than a story of a woman being traumatized and stalked by her lover. It explores the female friendships that Catherine has, the lack of support she receives from them, yet in the end she is the friendship protector! Highly recommend. BTW, the description is not entirely accurate - Catherine is NOT married to Lee, she is only dating him.
This book is not for the faint of heart. It is very well written and dives right in to OCD, anxiety disorders, PTSD and domestic abuse and murder. At times, this book left me with my jaw dropped as I would read about the manipulation and the lengths an abuser will go to control the "object of his desire". I found it, at times, to not be an easy read, but definitely a book worthy of being read.
Extremely well-written. The author reveals information gradually rather than dumping it on the reader all at once and so the suspense in the story builds and builds. Characters are beautifully drawn with even their appearance revealed by "show, don't tell." Best mystery I have read in a long, long time.
Great book. Well-written to keep you reading through the night!
A true page-turner; accurate depiction of how one person gains control over another, and great suspense.
This was a great book, did not want to put it down...cant wait for more books from this author!
Another excellent book by MacIntyre.
Extremely gripping and scary. Feels absolutely authentic. Disturbing and dark -- a must-read for all women. Think and question before you trust people. Run for your life if you sense any kind of abnormality.
An amazing psychological thriller that will keep you up at night! This is only for those of us who are fascinated by the dark heart of a sociopath who can move among & function in the world of "normal" people. The book travels back & forth from past to present,as Cathy tries to heal her heart & soul. She's left with physical scars, PTSD & OCD after a relationship with the handsome, cunning & cruel Lee,who becomes obsessed with her. This NOT your typical "stalker story," so hang on! This is Elizabeth Hayes' debut novel & I hope she's working on another one (NOW!)
