Centuries ago, two 'sworn sisters' are isolated by their families, but stay connected through a secret language written in the folds of a white silk fan. Now in modern-day Shanghai, their descendents must draw inspiration from the past as they struggle to maintain their own eternal bond in the face of life's complications. What unfolds are two stories, generations apart, but everlasting in their universal notion of love, hope and friendship.

Add a CommentI'm reading the summary and the comments and am wondering why they added modern day elements to a story that didn't need it at all.
I have never read the book, which most people say is better. I did enjoy the movie. It was very touching.
number family once ask live long hidden going day up older taste inside look look jumbo as the rasinette.
Beautifully filmed and an interesting story. Didn't read the novel. It was a tad slow in places, not enough to seriously hurt the film but enough to lose half a star.
What was a wonderful book about two girls who were sisters of the heart during the most trying years of their lives has become the most mundane and pointless movie ever. A modern side story has been added and the poetry that was in this story shared between two old sames has become watered down and self explanatory when there was no need of explanations. It is especially jarring when the women from the past are seen against the back drop of modern Shanghai. Truly a travesty to do this to a historical novel. Really, the audience is smarter than this, and should be treated in a more intelligent manner.
A good solid - "good" rating...a good watch if you have a couple of hours to kill.
The movie is not even half as good as the book.
Read the fiction first before you watch the film. You will understand the storyline better.
A totally unnecessary modern day storyline was added to the movie. Don't waste your time: http://www.economist.com/node/21536861
Interesting story, beautiful cinematography.
