The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hoping to distance himself from the fallout of a libel conviction, journalist Mikael Blomkvist retreats to a remote island in Sweden's far north where the unsolved murder of a young girl still haunts her industrialist uncle forty years later. Ensconced in a cottage on the island where the killer may still roam, Blomkvist's investigation draws him into the secrets and lies of the rich and powerful, and throws him together with one unlikely ally: tattooed, punk hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

I'm going to level here. I absolutely hated the book. It was slow and boring and ridiculous. The movie is better than the book, which doesn't take much and doesn't mean it's a good movie (it isn't.) The Swedish version is a lot better but in general, this is a terrible story about awful happenings with an incredibly boring main character (Blomkvist, not Lisbeth, Lisbeth is actually compelling but not enough to actually save this trainwreck.)

this is the second american version of the movie featuring the stunningly good rooney mara and the perfect daniel craig. the adaption is quite good. steel yourself for some terrible violence if you aren't familiar with the storyline. it all feeds into the plot and moves this twisting thriller forward. don't miss this movie!

Naturally the movie had some plot changes and the movie isn't as good as the book, which usually happens. Nonetheless, this it was still a good film with a minimal but powerful score. Rooney Mara's performance was great.

absolutely great movie. i read the books and saw the Swedish movie adaptations of the series and i have to give my vote to this latest version of the books. from the very beginning it was great: superb acting, awesome imagery, a narrative that kept for the most part faithful to the book. they did take a few liberties here and there with Lisbeth's character (not too many), which i found to be my biggest objection, as she is the main character in this story. however, unlike other book adaption movies, i did not see a blatant disregard for the book's storyline. this movie version worked so well because the actors were talented and did a great job, but also (and as equally important) it maintained a close to faithful narrative of the book. this movie worked for me for those reasons. and for those whose main complaint was that it was too violent, let me just say, that is supposed to be the idea. the underlying topic of this book is violence, specifically against women. and since it came up in the books, it is bound to be featured in the film. i hope that those involved in making this movie, will once again all come together and make the movie adaptations for the other two books of this series. i would stand in line for that. (p.s. i agree with my fellow commenter below in that the opening credits are "killer." they rock.)

i tried watching the Swedish version a couple of years ago and didn't make it thru, it put me off as i thought it was going to be a "LaFemme Nakita" knockoff.... boy was i wrong. This film is amazing. The story is very well thought out and acting is GREAT. ***Warning*** there is a very very violet sexual assult in it. Be prepared....

I read that the American version was terrible compared to the original Swedish with subtitles.

No so!

This film was every bit as good (if not better.)

If you want to read the story in both book and movie adaptions I'd suggest this sequence: see the English movie version first, then the original Swedish movie, and then read the book. I did not have the luxury of reading the book beforehand. But the English version with Daniel Craig is more superior to the Swedish one in that if follows the book much more closely, albeit the more logical twist in the ending. Rooney Mara's portrayal of Salander is downright staggering. It is she I imagine while I was reading the book. The critical, supporting characters are so exquisitely played from Christopher Plummer to Stellan Skarsgard, and to The Cat. Expect to re-watch the English movie more than once since there are some nuances easily missed in the first few screenings.

This US version was ok, but comes no where near the totally awesome Swedish production of this story (Which the library also has in its collection) That original version blows this one out of the water with its perfectly cast roles. This version I would rate as just ok and suggest watching the Swedish version. I prefer the one that is not dubbed and is in Swedish because they did not quite get the voices right with the dubbing. This is a compelling story, but be forewarned the sexual violence is heavy - ultimately I think the story balances it out. The books are good too.
