When the CIA's Department of Tourism is dismantled by an elaborate Chinese intelligence scheme that has caused numerous agent deaths, survivor Milo Weaver is placed at risk by his former boss, Alan Drummond, who uses one of Milo's aliases to exact revenge.
McMillan Palgrave
In Olen Steinhauer’s bestseller The Tourist, reluctant CIA agent Milo Weaver uncovered a conspiracy linking the Chinese government to the highest reaches of the American intelligence community, including his own Department of Tourism---the most clandestine department in the Company. The shocking blowback arrived in the Hammett Award--winning The Nearest Exit when the Department of Tourism was almost completely wiped out as the result of an even more insidious plot.
Following on the heels of these two spectacular novels comes An American Spy, Olen Steinhauer’s most stunning thriller yet. With only a handful of “tourists”—CIA-trained assassins—left, Weaver would like to move on and use this as an opportunity to regain a normal life, a life focused on his family. His former boss in the CIA, Alan Drummond, can’t let it go. When Alan uses one of Milo’s compromised aliases to travel to London and then disappears, calling all kinds of attention to his actions, Milo can’t help but go in search of him.
Worse still, it's beginning to look as if Tourism's enemies are gearing up for a final, fatal blow.
With An American Spy, Olen Steinhauer, by far the best espionage writer in a generation, delivers a searing international thriller that will settle once and for all who is pulling the strings and who is being played.
An American Spy is one of The New York Times Notable Books of 2012.

Add a CommentGreat book. Well worth the time spent finding it and reading it.
This was an excellent addition to the first two novels--The Tourist and No Exit--although, because of the length of time since last sequel, I found myself a little lost at times. Several new characters as well as expansion of others made it a wonderful read.
I don't know the genre well, but this was a page turner and great spy novel. The protagonist is deeply conflicted in his amoral capabilities and his moral commitments to his family and ultimately his ideals (including patriotism, but not in a formulaic way). Very well achieved through a plotty but ultimately reconcilable chain of events and motivations. Great summer read.
I've read this spy novel series from the beginning, and keep getting impressed by how good they are. Starting with The Tourist, and continuing with The Nearest Exit, this series takes us into a secret department of the CIA and the world of Milo Weaver. In this novel, Milo is recovering from his wounds and searching for a new job, but his old boss has revenge on his mind and wants to involve Milo. The Chinese intelligence officer that blew up Milo's old department is still looking for a traitor of his own. Milo's father wants him to take over his United Nations operation. It would seem that Milo is under attack from many sides and just wants to make a life with his family. We see things from Milo's point of view, the Chinese general, Xin Zhu, Milo's sister Alexandra, and Milo's old boss Alan, as well as a few other minor characters. With lots going on, and twists and turning in an evolving plot, the different points of view add to the story as we encounter them, bringing more detail and a fuller sense of what is happening. Great plot, I could hardly put it down once I started it.
I enjoyed this book!! I didnt read the first two but the author gave enough information about previous events, that you could follow what happens. Good action,!!!
This one is very hard to follow. I enjoyed it, but I'm still not completely sure what happened. I plan to read it again.
