Add a CommentWow, fantastic film. This will be one that will stick with you for days, mulling over the twists and turns, and the impact of war on people. I may have missed some of the subtleties though, as the OPL copy of this film is French only (no English subtitles)
Vicious nasty show which uses brutal graphic violence, perhaps trying to make a point that I didn't get. If you like to see children butchered, rape, incest and assorted other depravity then this is your show. As a Canadian I am ashamed to be associated with this filthy garbage. Reminds me of American shows where they can't think of a plot twist so they pull out the guns and start shooting people for our entertainment.
Did not like
A very engaging drama by Quebec director Denis Villeneuve. I was told the film was shot in 25 days with a relatively modest budget. This again goes to show the quality of a film is not always tied to its cost. This is a very worthwhile film to watch, and to ponder over the davastating effect of war, and religion-based hatred, on people. Highly recommended. English subtitles.
An excellent movie about war and what it does to people. It is violent at times because it does take place during war. Awful things happen in war. The way the story was told keeps your attention. I do agree with the comment below where someone comments that the mother and daughter look too much alike. I agree. As it is a flash back movie and changes timelines quite a bit you have to pay close attention to ensure you know when the mother is in the story or the daughter.
The revelations of a mother's secrets take place in a middle-eastern country, perhaps Lebanon. Anger, hatred and murder is widespread and occurs when Christians and Muslims collide with one another. One genealogical relationship is similar to that of Faye Dunaway and her sister/daughter in Chinatown. This movie slowly unravels the web of mystery as we also get a picture of the horrible slaughter caused by religious hatred. Nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.
Words cannot express how grateful I am to have seen this film. It is one of, if not the best films, I've ever seen. One has to really watch and listen carefully to what everyone is saying. I feel that it would of been much easier to follow the film if the Mother and Daughter didn't look so much alike -- I really wonder what the casting people were thinking when they made the decision to cast a Mother and Daughter that looked so much alike. Other than that, I really felt this was an excellent film and gives one a good look at what happens in other cultures. Five Stars!!!!
Do everything you can to watch this film, but pay attention as it demands that you understand what is going on. The acting is unbelievable the story even more so. The director tells you what is going to happen in earlier scenes and I was still blown away when the obvious is told. If they allowed it I would give this film ten stars. This is hands down one of, if not the best movie I have ever seen. Done! Now go see it.
War is hell, hatred & bigotry brutal. This is an excellent film of gigantic proportions, in symbolic realisms of family, religion, war & personal fortitude. Well worth watching!
brutal. surprising ending. A serious look at ethnic fight. The toll on people.
