Item Details

"[This book] challenges not just the violence of straight homophobia but the hypocrisy of mainstream gay norms that say the only way to stay safe is to act straight: get married, join the military, adopt kids! This anthology reinvokes the anger, flamboyance, and subversion once thriving in gay subcultures in order to create something dangerous and lovely: an exploration of the perils of assimilation; a call for accountability; a vision for change."--P. [4] of cover.

This book is part of a much needed discussion on the topics of assimilation, internalized homophobia, gender enforcement and body policing in queer men's communities (to name just a few). The essays/stories seem to have been selected to be challenging to almost anyone who comes across them. Prepare yourself to be offended at some turns, validated at others--but mostly to think long and hard about current queer activism in terms of what is being accomplished, and what is being lost.
