Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.
Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list. Short on time to find the murderer, Stephanie is also under pressure from family and friends to choose between her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie’s mom wants her to dump them both for a former high school football star who’s just returned to town. Stephanie’s sidekick, Lula, suggests a red-hot boudoir “bake-off.” And Joe’s old-world grandmother gives Stephanie “the eye,” which may mean that it’s time to get out of town.
With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

Add a CommentEvanovich painfully prolongs this series by rehashing a very soap opera style formula of more fluff than substance. Sadly her recurring characters, who seem stuck in a time warp, are boring and predictable.
I loved this book !!!! on my second janet evanocich book and want more !!!!!
This is my first Stephanie Plum book and I have to say I found it very disappointing. I pulled this book from the New York Best Sellers list expecting a quality read, but in the end it wasn't good at all. There were too many characters introduced at the outset almost as if they were rushed, the relationships felt hollow and forced, Lula, Vince, and Mooner seemed ridiculous and over the top and almost pointless. The end of the book felt like it was there just to finish it off, but really didn't tie everything together. There were some funny parts where I did laugh out loud, but by the end it seemed like such a long time ago with too many cheap jokes following the one or two good ones. Overall I would not recommend this book.
There is nothing new in this book and even the old story lines aren't funny in this one, but tired. Still wavering between the two guys and even they are no longer sexy. Boring, really - it seems like JE has lost interest in her characters.
Stephanie is back and as with most books in this series, she is still torn between Morelli and Ranger. Still riding around the Burg with Lulu trying to catch the D grade perps as a bounty hunter. Still driving her Grandma Mazur to viewings at the funeral parlour. Still in the same place she was in book two. There has been very little growth in her or any of the other characters over fifteen books. And while I enjoy these books like I enjoy my comfy old sweats, I want Stephanie to grow and change. At least get better as a bounty hunter. Still have the crazy perps that only her cousin Vinnie would bailout, but have her be better at taking them down. This might require Evanovich have to create more crazy perps and felons, but it would make for a better book. Only for the Evanovich fan.
I really think Evanovitch should move on -- this story line is so old and tired it's not even fun any more. I got halfway thru and gave up. I won't be reading the next one.
Stephanie needs to make a choice: Morelli or Ranger - this plot device is wearing a bit thin. This 17th installment of the numerical Trenton-based series features the usual cast of odd-ball characters, including crazy "FTAs"; as well as the predictable food binges/fights; visits to the funeral parlor, and destroyed cars. I think Evanovich would be wise to wrap this all up by the 20th novel.
Much better plot than her last novel. As usually Lula and Grandma Mazur are hilarious. The love triangle with Stephanie, Ranger and Morelli is getting a bit old. I wish she would just pick one and move on with that story line.
Disappointing. Compared to some of Janet's earlier books, this one was too formulaic.
I can't help it! I have to keep reading this series if only to find out if Stephanie ever commits to... anybody! I have to admit that the books were getting a bit stale, the humour a bit old, but Evanovich redeemed herself in 17. It was quite funny. I think it's getting close to time to wrap it up, though. (I put the "I heart Joe" sticker in my car window!)
