The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel and Stephan about their former colleague David. All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel, the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it?

Clearly a hit piece on the Mossad, this movie has led some to think it was based on true events, which it was not. I was quite saddened to see a great actress such as Helen Mirren involved in this shameful scheme to denigrate the brave Mossad agents.

This is an English remake of the Israeli film of the same name. I thought that the original was a little more tense in the stalking scenes in the second half. And I liked a couple of the Hitchcockian techniques that were included in the original. Also, I thought that the original Nazi "monster" was more threatening and evil.

As somebody who had not seen the original, I liked this one. It takes a few good twists that certainly keeps one guessing. I recommend.

The Debt is an overly ambitious remake that falls flat. The cast assembled is unquestionably talented but their onscreen characters offer nothing compelling. Awkward historical moralizing plays to cliches and perpetuates simplistic victim-perpetrator views of post-World War II anti-Semitism. A shorter runtime and smarter editing might have saved this one. If you're looking for another film on Mossad secret agents, pop in Munich.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was steady and interesting and intelligent with good acting. Helen Mirren always brings it--she is so great to watch.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

Well acted historical spy thriller. Nice "then and now" sequences showing past and present. The story just wasn't all that compelling to me. The few scenes of action were frantic and realistic. There just wasn't alot for me to get behind, and some of the things the lead characters did seemed extreme and/or foolish. I enjoyed it enough and finished it to see how it turned out. The major twist in the plot was a surprise.
