Add a QuoteOliver Tate (narrating): "I have no idea what I'm hoping to achieve by breaking into Graham's house - I just want to give him the idea that I'm deranged and therefore capable of anything. This will probably involve me urinating on something."
Oliver Tate: "I got you these, uh, these matches. Your favorite." Jordana Bevan: "I noticed that when you light a match, the flame is the same shape as a falling tear." Oliver Tate (narrating): "I knew then, it was too late to save her. She'd gone gooey in the middle. From now on, she'll buy little gifts for her favorite teachers, and... she'll admire the scenery, and she'll buy soup for homeless people... and she'll never burn my leg hair again..."
Oliver Tate: (making a toast over a candlelit dinner): "Here's to us and a wonderful evening of lovemaking..." (Jordana stares blankly)

Add a CommentEvidently, I'm of the minority that thoroughly enjoyed this Ben Stiller production. I felt the story, written and directed by Richard Ayoade, was fresh, ponderous, introspective. Biting wit, terrific cast, and smart cinematography. Oliver's semi-neurotic narrative of his concern for his parents' catatonic marriage, and his comical awkwardness with girlfriend Jordana, (whose cynical indifference and 'perma-smirk' seemed to me a perfect match for him), just really struck a chord with me. Two young pyromaniacs running around on the beach in Wales. Strangely sweet. A celebration of first love and its difficulties. This is miles from the usual drivel. FIVE STARS.
Quirky is right. Not sure it's my cup of tea.
Quirky and cute.
Interesting enough, but too slow for my liking. I liked the characters and the premise, just found it a little choppy.
Quirky deadpan comedy with memorable visuals and solid acting from its cast members. The handful of wistful songs heard on the soundtrack reminded me a bit of Badly Drawn Boy but turn out to Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys. One caution: whoever wrote the narrative for the DVD sleeve must not have seen the movie because many of the plot details are completely inaccurate.
i prefer more commerical movie
Romantic-Drama, seen through the eyes/mind of a young boy experiencing dating-love for the first time while trying to gage-understand all he takes in via experience-spying on neighbor-parents. Real solid visuals to enhance scenes and make it a much better story told.
Not a huge WOW, but a gentle "I liked that quite a bit in the end".
Great character development. Story about teenage love angst. Good acting, script and even credit titles; was surprised how much I enjoyed a movie I never heard of.
Covers most of the cliches of indie movies (Rushmore, Napolean Dynamite), yet worth watching. Oliver thinks he's real 'deep' but he is just a poseur. Sally Hawkins is hilarious as his mother.
