During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, the HMS Surprise, and the larger French warship, Acheron, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. The ship's surgeon balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together.

Add a CommentJust to add a comment first to one below. This is not just a guys film. I'm female andThis has been and continues to be my favorite film of all time. I do have a particular love for the sea and I can watch in again and again and always see something different. Peter Weir is an incredible director and you should really see everything made by him. He explores the theme of man (usually male figures) and the world. What I especially love about this film is how many themes of humaness it studies, and explores. On a ship you have an entire society getting along (or not -- mutiny!) and in this case there are ranks of respect, there are friendships and foes. This film's attention to detail and realness (very little cgi I believe) adds to every scene. You are litterly gripping your seat wondering what's next. The relationship between the captain and the doctor , played by Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany is one of the best on screen peformances between two actors I have ever seen. And yes the soundtract is marvelous.
This movie was a welcome change for me in these times of computer generated this, that and the other... Don't get me wrong - that technology is terrific, and it does have its place... but this was... human. These sailors' vintage nautical lives were... captivating (albeit incredibly trying and difficult). I guess I'm envious. This 'David vs. Goliath' (brains vs. braun) tale was well written, and Russell Crowe is at his best. He was born for this role. Good musical score, also. Great flick.
Crowe the Great Master and Commander........though he is acting to be.
This movie is absolutely amazing for audio freaks and should be played on your HOMETHEATER!! The scene titled "the attack!" is something you'll play over and over again. The sounds of the cannons firing from the ship in the fog and hitting "The HMS Surprise" is simply AWESOME!!! Hearing the ship being torn apart by cannon balls while listening to men running around on your surround speakers will have you ducking and running for cover. The sound designers did an excellent job making this film "Sound Freak" approved!!! And that's just the start of many scenes with great sounds. This movie also has a very good story that will keep you into the movie and cheering for them in the end. Of course it's in my collection and i recommend it!!! 5stars!!!! Amazing sounds and great story. Two fish filet sandwiches with tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, pickels and coke.
I'm not familiar with the Patrick O'Brien novel that this movie is based off of. Still, it seems to be a solid portrayal of life at sea during the time period in which it is set and the cast is quite solid.
Great movie. I wonder why they don't make more movies where the English lose. Being Americans I think a picture about the English losing would sell very well here. Like WW2 without the Americans. Cool movie though.
Exciting and almost painfully realistic. It irks me the opposing warship was changed from American to French -- quel cop-out. On the other hand, I enjoyed watching Paul Bettany play in the sand with tortoises.
Worth a watch.
Good movie - not a chick flick, but still enjoyable. If you're into classical music, the soundtrack is great.
This is definitely a 'guy' movie, but highly entertaining none-the-less. Tends to dwell on things like doing surgery on yourself (please!) and other blood and guts scenes which slow down a great story. So unnecessary and detracting. And it is a great story as it touches on the human spirit very deeply. It is beautiful to watch. Russell Crowe is an excellent Jack Aubrey, it seems to be a natural, fun fit for this actor. I would like to see another Patrick O'Brien story made into film.
