Add a CommentWritten from one of my students: Being an immigrant kid was not always easy. This book City of Orphans by Avi is about a tireless, young newsie in 1893 named Maks who lives with his hard working Danish Family in New York City. When he is selling newspapers, a gang of teenagers called the Plug Ugly Gang, led by the savage Bruno, tries to rob Maks. A courageous, homeless girl named Willa saves him. Maks ends up taking Willa home, where she becomes part of the family. At the same time his sister, Emma, is being accused of theft at the Waldorf Hotel. Maks and Willa team up with a detective named Donck—who is suffering from TB--to try to prove that Emma is innocent. One of the most thrilling parts of the story is when Maks and all his newsie friends burn down the Plug Uglies' house while saving Willa. This book is realistic historical fiction that brings the year of 1893 back to life again. The illustrations show what the characters look like and the moods of the pictures express the hard times the characters lived in.
this is my 2nd favorite book ever!I would recommend this book for kids 10-13.
Kind of entertaining, but it seems like it was written for a 5th grader.
