This is an interesting book that describes how a troubled kid (an ex-gang member) became a successful entrepreneur. This is more of a “feel good” book than a business book with substance. The book conveys the traditional messages of business and entrepreneurship: work hard, be honest, work with honest people, be ready to take your chances, learn from your failures, honor your promises, etc. The author does not specifically tell you how he grew his companies (by 20% every month in one case). He does not specify the strategies or tactics he undertook to turn around his company in 2008 to make it grow during the recession while his competition imploded. If you have read other entrepreneurship and/or strategy books (such as those by Drucker, Porter, or Timmons and Spinelli), then you won’t learn much from this book. If you know nothing about entrepreneurship, then this book may be a good start. However I would recommend “New Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century” by Jeffry Timmons and Stephen Spinelli and “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” by Peter Drucker instead of “Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain”.
