The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

I’m torn. I loved parts of this book. Other parts dragged and dragged and I had to force myself to finish it. Very interesting premise with amazingly vivid and magical descriptions of the circus but in the end I just couldn’t bring myself to really care about the two-dimensional main characters.

The story isn't completely developed and the characters are lacking dimension, but I found myself easily and quickly lost in the magic and the story. It's a fun read provided you don't start thinking on it too hard or too long - Just go with it.

Hauntingly entertaining, get whisked back to the late 1800s and travel through Europe and North America, whereby Celia is bound to a challenge given to her at an early age, while Marco orphaned and taken up by a non-descript gentleman. Both will challenge each other but not in the realms they are used to - but all things aside, these characters that are engaged in this circus that do some pretty amazing things. Hopefully they can keep it together, unless the challenge will tear them apart. Thoroughly enjoyed!

The first 50 pages didn't do much to capture my attention, but I made myself read another 50. At 110 pages in, I decide to stop. It's not the worst things I've ever read, but I was already starting to skim the words, which is not a good sign. I don't get the hype, but I'm okay with that. There are plenty of other great books to curl up with.

The characters in this novel reminded me of some of Robertson Davies' characters - maybe it was the circus theme but I think there was more to it than that. Very thought provoking for me. I really liked this book.

At halfway point: elegant, magical and exotic. But somehow lifeless with no strongly engaging characters or drama.

I absolutely loved this book...............until I got to the end, what a let down while maintaining the story flow. Sadly, I was utterly disappointed, even though I guess any other ending would've been disastrous. I'm just glad the book isn't a series.

One of the best novels I've ever read. The book reads like a magic trick, jumping around in time, playing with perception, spinning wonderful and mysterious illusions, and posing questions about love, loss, life, death, art, fate, chance, and the divide between artist and audience.

wonderful book of a fantasy world of magic, fate, free will and circuses

An imaginative suspense story of creation and the inner workings of duality. Some have made comments regarding their disappointments how the story turns into a love story. I say what better way to create than to collaborate! The details are so intricately intertwined and beautifully described I was simply transported to a world I would have loved to inhabit.

The Burgess sisters arrive together. Tara and Lainie do a little bit of everything. Sometimes dancers, sometimes actresses. Once they were librarians, but that is a subject they will only discuss if heavily intoxicated.
