Louie

The Complete First Season

(DVD - 2011)
Average Rating: 4 stars out of 5.
Louie

From the uproariously unrestrained mind of comedian Louis C.K. comes the year's most outrageously original comedy! As a newly divorced, well-meaning father raising two young daughters, Louie struggles to cope with his strenuous mid-life shake-up, and his stand-up comedy provides a gleefully warped reflection of his hectic, everyday reality. There are disastrous first dates, indecent proposals, high school bullies, booze-addled play dates-and more.

This DVD is my first exposure to Louie C. K. I'd heard his name mentioned as being a very popular in stand-up, but I'd never actually seen him or his comedy. After watching Season 1 of "Louie", I can say he's definitely a highly skilled journeyman stand-up comic. And clearly a student of the art of comedy. His comic premise is to build tension -- at times to uncomfortable extremes -- and then releasing the tension with a joke. This is what he does throughout the episodes, and provided the viewer is able to excuse his earthy language, it more or less works on the comedy front. At times though his comedy technique goes too far and crosses the line, becoming contrived and manipulative, the plots simply a shell-game for the comic sorcerer. I've heard him described in media reports as the current "King of Comedy". I don't think so. Watching Season 1 was worthwhile, but I doubt I'll watch any of the later seasons. The "Pilot" episode, and the very last episode "Night Out" are the best of the lot. Reservedly recommended.

Like Tom Brady, this guy at first seems like a Bumpkin, but after seeing the work (Tom), or listening for at least 2 minutes (Louie) you realise you are with a master. Sneakily experimental this half Mexican/half Hungarian Jew grew up in Newton, MA (via Mexico City) and made it big in NYC. ====== My favorite stuff concerns his mother and is long over-due on the arttistic scene. Almost NOBODY will do this/go there. Don’t under-estimate this guy; that huge forehead is where all the future-think is. ====== In this whole 1st season Louie does almost everything: writing, starring, editing. He’s a one-man creative dynamo. He says in a commentary that if he had more $ he would have good straight-ahead jazz (a la Coltrane) all over the soundtrack, but, could only afford a local guy or two. Can you imagine Trane and Louie running through Manhattan?.......... I also love that Todd Barry is around, but doesn't speak. I happen to love the way Todd speaks, so this kills me!

Been a fan of his stand-up act for over a decade. Lovable loser! It's a pretty good schtick, but how else would one feel if THEY were an "old", fat, balding, single father?

The first season of Louie features the stand-up comedy of Louie C. K. as well as scenes from his day to day life. Louie shares custody of his two daughters with his ex-wife and also tries to maintain some semblance of a social life. Louie's comedic take on his daughters, his social life and other topics are both funny and unorthodox.
