"Biutiful" takes place in grimy and crowded parts of Barcelona that are a world away from that city's tourist attractions. Uxbal is a midlevel mobster, in charge of Chinese sweatshop workers making counterfeit watches and bags, and the African vendors who sell them. He collects and dispenses money, and runs interference with the cops. He also has two young children, a mentally unstable former wife, and a terminal illness. He is trying, despite his job, to be a good man, a good father. He tries to be stoical, tough, and compassionate, but he suffers because he cannot do good things, and he cares about the consequences of his actions.

A grim tale of a man, his family and social circle as a middle man between a Chinese sweat shop making knockoff clothes and the Senegal immigrants who sold the clothes in the streets. Things went from a chaotic start through a series of unfortunate events to a horiffic end. A stark contrast in one scene when Uxbal looked out from the window of his rundown apartment and panned over the distant forest of cranes and steeples of the majestic Sagrada Familia gothic temple. Plenty of food for thought for spaniard sociologists.

Can't stand trying to watch a movie when they make sure you can't read the subtitles. How much imagination does it take to do subtitles in a clear readable landscape? Had to quit watching this one for that reason. No rating.

I was warned that this film was a real tear jerker. I did not cry but felt pathos for the main characters. The acting was excellent, the storyline very believable, but I found it frustrating to watch, I expected at least a glimmer of hope, but that just doesn`t happen. Very sad film.

Javier Bardem's stellar performance as a good man involved in a life of crime to take care of his family saves what would otherwise be a very dark and dreary trip into the underworld of immigrant exploitain in Barcelona, Spain. A reviewer on movies.com referred to Biutiful as "The Human Centipede for people who think they are too fancy for The Human Centipede". While the comparison may be unfair, 2hours into Biutiful, you can't help but understand the sentiment. This is a movie where everything that can go wrong, does, and you, as the viewer are given little justice or hopr for the future. Nonetheless, it is a movie worth watching, for Javier Bardem's performance as well as the shocking depiction of the fate of illegal immigrants not just in Barcelona, but anywhere in the world.

One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Thoughtful and smart

It is a beautiful film because it reveals the truth of life. You see a man's love to his children, the true colors of human nature and human emotions. This film wasn't made for big box profits. You will see the beauty of this film if you understand what life is about in reality. It definitely doesn't give you the wow or make you high. It makes you think and make you wonder. It's a film for those seek true happiness in life, not the laughters that you will forget in few hours. It is beautiful. It is real. It is deep. Thanks for the production, Javier Bardem and the cast.

A well-made film in which the already-grim life of a man who ekes a living as a go-between between various people who exploit illegal immigrants (making him an exploiter too, essentially) ... gets significantly worse. It does demonstrate that bleak can be "biutiful" -- as the wintry landscape that bookends the film demonstrates metaphorically -- but one still needs fortitude to watch Uxbal/Bardem dealing with his problems as the shadows darken.

Never a big fan of subtitles. This was a very dark and sad movie. It was still well done
