Sarah Dessen has /outdone/ herself with this book. As cp51 said, it did mostly center more around family, rather than romance, and that was completely fine with me. Mclean, being the new girl and all, doesn't get a chance to reinvent herself in this neighborhood as she did in her previous moves. But it helps her get close friends, and her-next-door-neighbor-boy-genius Dave. The characters are real, and I think Sarah Dessen really showed how divorces can affect the kids. I LOVE this book; highly suggest it for anyone who is looking for a story with a moral and a bit romance.

This book was a bit different from her previous ones (which I highly suggest you read) in that it was more focused on family than on the romance. Nonetheless, it was still really good. My favorite part of her novels is how quirky, yet real, her characters are.

A story about Mclean Sweet and her struggle to find herself as her father continuously moves them around to follow various jobs. When she moved into Lakeview, she began to make friends, and lasting relationships that she didn't want to let go of, especially with Dave, her cute, and smart next door neighbor. To make matters worse, her mother chose that moment to want to spend more time with her daughter. As Mclean struggles to find herself, she steps up to the plate and starts to make decisions for herself. Her parents, seeing the toll the divorce has taken on her, agree to let her finish high school with Dave and stay with a friend, while her father moves to Hawaii and her mother continues to raise her babies.

This book is all about life and reality, and what happens when you decide to choose a wrong part .Mclean Sweet has been on the road for a while - four homes in two years. Every single time, she pretends to be someone else, everyone but Mclean. Ever since her parents' split, she ignored her mother most of the time, never forgiving her for cheating and leaving her dad for a basketball coach in the high-society lifestyle, and took care of her dad wherever they went. Somehow, Mclean liked that - just disappearing midway with her dad, so she didn't need to cling onto anything, or anyone. But then when she moved into Lakeview, she was stuck with her name, Mclean, where she couldn't pretend to be anyone but herself. There she meets Dave, a scientific prodigy, who teaches her to be more like herself. Slowly, everything seemed to be perfect for the moment - she had friends, and she felt welcomed for who she was. But as her mother became more desperate and clingy to her, even threatening to bring her lawyer back to the custody agreement, she realizes that her father might need to move to Hawaii, where he tells Mclean to go back to their old home to stay with her mother. Refusing, and confused, she leaves for the forced 'quality time' with her mother, and overhears her mother talking, and thinks her own mother doesn't care for her anymore. Leaving for the only place she could think of, a motel named Poseidon where she and her mother often went to before the divorce, she cries to herself before her parents arrive, frantic. Her parents find out how big of an impact the divorce was on Mclean, and instead of taking her back to Mclean's original home, her mother decides that Mclean should stay in Lakeview with her friends to finish the final year of high school. There, Mclean graduates, alongside her boyfriend, Dave.

"life is easy but not about fun It was just a tiny moment. Not a kiss, not even real contact. But for all the things it wasn't, it meant so much. I'd been running for years: there was nothing scarier, to me, than just be still with someone. And yet, there on that dark road, going home, I was". (pg 300)
