Nina is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company. Her life, like most in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her mother Erica, a former ballerina who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: new dancer Lily, who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

This is good.
Darren Aronofsky delivers!!!! Check out his other films, Pi and Requiem For A Dream...
I found it to be over-rated, predictable and dull. It is rare that I dislike a movie this much.
To what missy2 said: I see absolutely no connection to film Carrie. Ballet is a dying art, so obviously women are going to be competing to get the lead role. Carrie was just typical teenage bullying. Portman did train for this film. There was obviously a double at certain points as no one can learn ballet that quickly (I believe she trained anywhere from 4 months to a year).____ I've read enough of the comments to get that very few people actually understand what this film was about, and that seems to be where the poor reviews stem from. To describe Nina as being insane is lazy. There is a lot more going on there, a lot of subtle cues that most people aren't going to pick up. If you don't like films that make you think, avoid this.
Natalie Portman stunning as usual but this movie certainly had some errie dazzling special effects & twists which is why I gave this feature a 3 star rating!
I have a background in ballet and still didn't like this movie. Give it a big skip unless you need something to put you to sleep.
did not live up to the hype
As a ballet subscriber, I was looking forward to seeing this as I thought it was two ballerinas facing off over a role and the lengths they went to to succeed. Now, I will have to say my DVD kept freezing so I did have to skip some parts - but I got the general gist and craziness, and was glad when it was finally over.
I found this to be an excellent movie. It has everything you'd want -- romance, mystery, thoughtful and surprising twists. Creative. Natalie Portman did an amazing job.
