Summary
Add a Summaryjust finished the book, and haven't decided whether I hated it or loved it. I'm giving it 3 stars because I was hooked, and that counts for something. I read the first chapter on Cassandra Clare's site, and the second chapter at the back of 'City of Glass'. They were easily the best chapters of the book. I didn't enjoy the scenes after that-Clary's dialogue was choppy, very out-of character. She shifted back into the Clary we know and love from the first few books somewhere in the middle of the story. I also disliked the Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde thing Jace has going on, I swear at the end of one chapter he's telling Clary he loves her and at the beginning of the next he's avoiding her. I was looking forward to the Clary-Jace scenes, but 60% of them involved Clary whining about him not returning his calls and Jace repeatedly trying to convince her that he loves her, but can't be near her. Why can't this couple be left alone? I assumed at the end of the last book that they'd uncover some dark secret of their past, why Clary was the 'wrong person' to fall in love with. Maybe they will in one of the next two books but their relationship was mainly Jace and Clary pining after one another from a distance. Oh, and their final scenes in this book were so sickeningly 'been there, done that'. I used to love Jace's character, because his snarkiness and dark sense of humor made for some interesting dialogue. I figured with Valentine dead he wouldn't be whining about how he was a monster, and didn't deserve Clary etc. But of course Clare found a way to incorporate that into this book, too. The ending frustrating me immensely, I won't spoil it but I wish dead characters would stay dead. I like Simon but I'm not sure his character is strong enough to keep a book going. Guess we'll see in the next books. I will still be looking forward to reading them.
This book was a complicated jumble of events with no clear plot. It mostly just follows Simon around as her tries to figure out his life is a vampire. However, Clary is thrown in every once and a while. The problem is that almost every scene with Clary serves no purpose. She angsts, then she makes out with Jace, then she worries he's going to leave her, then she prepares for her mother's wedding....then she angsts about Jace leaving her. Honestly, this book may have been the shortest of the series so far, but it could have been a lot shorter if Clary had been cut out. Also, there are murders of unimportant extras thrown in to the book to create mystery and tension. These murders have no impact on the characters, and are uninteresting to read about. They have to do with a convoluted plot involving dead babies, character who should be dead, and a pretty boring villain who is only there because Cassandra Clare decided she needed a Valentine replacement. ---See my full review here: http://throughthebookvine.blogspot.com/2011/04/city-of-fallen-angels.html
I have waited so long to continue the story of Clary, Jace, Simon et al and I was not disappointed (*spoiler* .. until the last chapter!). Will Clary & Jace ever be able to be happily ever after? Cassandra Clare seems to love to torture her readers, lol. I liked that Jace be-friended Simon, and the intro of new character, Kyle / Jordan. I did go to bed sad because of the ending.. I love the way Cassie writes, but I find her Twitter account really annoying - there are too many spoilers. If she spent less time tweeting and more time writing, maybe it would make me happy (:
Quotes
Add a Quote"As long as everyone's wearing their own pants." "I see I have come in on a fascinating moment in the conversation."
"Do you have a lot of other profound thoughts like that? Blood is blood? A toaster is a toaster? A Gelatinous Cube is a Gelatinous Cube?" - Simon
"Jordan slammed the coatrack down on the ground and sighed. "if you were a vampire, this would have been a lot more useful." "yes," said Jace. "or, you know, just someone with a lot of coats."
"We can buy you one of those books they have for little kids 'Timmy Has Two Dads'. Except I don't think they have one called 'Timmy Has Two Dads and One of Them Was Evil'. That part you're just going to have to work through on your own." - Simon
"Oh, good. You're starting to talk about yourself in the third person. That's not a sign of impending megalomania or anything." - Simon to Raphael
"Hey," said Jace. who was sitting on an overturned speaker, looking at his cellphone, "do you want to see a photo of Alec and Magnus in Berlin?" "Not really," said Simon. "Magnus is wearing lederhosen." "And yet, still no."
"You and your name-dropping. 'I knew Michael'. 'I knew Sammael'. 'The angel Gabriel did my hair'. It's like I'm with the Band with biblical figures."
"He looks," Simon had once said to Isabelle, "like he's thinking about something deep and meaningful, but if you ask him what it is, he'll punch you in the face."
It’s fascinating. You know all these words, and they’re all English, but when you string them together into sentences, they just don’t make any sense.
"You're the first Shadowhunter I've ever met." “That’s too bad,” said Jace, “since all the others you meet from now on will be a terrible letdown."

Add a CommentWHAT a great ending! ready for the next book!
VERY pleased with this book. Simon is an awesome character! Magnus and Alec's story is developing nicely too, and I'm glad we were able to get a glimpse of Magnus's past. I'm also glad Clary is developing a backbone. Good story!
I loved it. Can't wait to start reading the next one! :)
Disappointing.. It's not too bad, but compared to its other 3 books, this one is nothing.
It's such a shame she decide to contuine with this series. If this was a spin-off series (which it isn't) it would have worked better (but only by a bit). But it isn't and that's where the biggest problem emerges. It is a new series, though it's set in the same place and have all the same characters it's not the same series as the first three. The main reason being that the villian of the last three books was KILLED off. The whole goal of the seires was resolved in the last book. And really, it barely works as a spin-off becasue there was no hint to another book. It had ENDED! The only reason it's here, is becasue of money. And that makes it all the worse. Though I will give it this, the parts with Alec and Magnus were enjoyable.
Before I even started this book I knew it wouldnt be as good as the first three. It isn't as bad as some people make out, some people say it drones on but I promise it's worth it the ending is quite good. I'm definately looking forward to reading book 5.
so i'm going to torture myself and read this book, against my better judgement. but if city of fallen angels is anything like everyone else has said, i'm probably going to end up throwing it across the room. unfortunately.
I loved this series up to this book, however found a HUGE disappointment when reading City Of Fallen Angels! I found that this book just droned on, and on about the same stuff! A good book needs ACTION!!! AND SUSPENSE!!! This book has very little of that. It just bored me to read it... I hope the next book will make up for this slack in this one.
THIS IS A FANTASTIC BOOK!!!!! OMG I totally loved this book and all of the books in this series. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO READ THESE SERIES (the mortal instrument series). Every book in this serie brings shivers down my spine with excitement!!!! :)
i loved simon and jordan in this bokk
