As the first girl to be born into the Nachimanda family in over thirty-five years, the beautiful Devi is the object of adoration of her entire family. Spirited and strong-willed, she befriends the shy Devanna, a young boy whose mother has died in tragic circumstances. Together they grow up amidst the luscious jungles, rolling hills, and coffee plantations of Coorg in Southern India; cocooned by an extended family whose roots to this beautiful land can be traced for centuries. Their futures seem inevitably linked, but everything changes when, one night, they attend a "tiger wedding." It is there that Devi gets her first glimpse of Machu, the celebrated tiger killer and a hunter of great repute. Although she is still a child and Machu is a man, Devi vows to marry him one day. It is this love that will gradually drive a wedge between Devi and Devanna, sowing the seed of a devastating tragedy that will change the fate of all three --- an event that has unforeseen and far-reaching consequences for generations to come.

Told in rich, lyrical prose and set against the background of a changing society, TIGER HILLS is a sweeping saga about one woman's determination to live life on her own terms --- and a riveting novel about the choices we make in the name of family, nation, and love.

The writing is lovely, haunting, and all very moving – yet the story is incredibly sad and enraging (feminists, social activists, people with consciences: you’ve been warned). I stopped reading halfway through the near 500 page book because I simply couldn’t take the depressing material anymore. If you dig stories about the terrible, horrible things people do to each other all in the name of ‘honor’ and ‘tradition’ then add this one to your collection.

I've been reading quite a bit of fiction lately written by Indian authors. This appealed to me and the reviews were good. Although it is good historical fiction and the setting is wonderful; it's all been done before and there was nothing really unique about this title. Childhood romance gone wrong, unrequited love, good son vs. bad son, and it all turns out well in the end somehow. Les than memorable, but still and easy and enjoyable read.

Set in Southern India, this debut novel is a beautifully written family saga spanning three generations. It begins in the 1870s, with the birth of a much anticipated child; the first girl to be born in many years. It is this girl, Devi who is the centre of the story and has a lasting connection with all the characters in the story. As a young child she befriends Devanna, a shy boy in her village and together they grow up surrounded by the beauty of the Coorg region. Devi is a very strong-willed character who is used to getting what she wants. She falls in love with a man from a nearby village, not realizing that her best friend is also in love with her. Devi is not always likable and her choices have far-reaching effects on her family. We follow these characters for their lifetime as the love triangle unfolds, sometimes with tragic consequences. Told against the backdrop of a beautiful country undergoing many changes at the beginning of a new century, Tiger Hills is rich in historical detail, with all the makings of a tragic love story.

Sarita was born in Coorg, India, where her debut novel, Tiger Hills, is set. Her maternal grandmother was a born storyteller and often regaled young Sarita with tales of thieving princes and houses made from salt. Her mother and paternal grandfather were avid readers. So Sarita's love of books was born. Sarita has worked as an investment banker in India and Hong Kong, but now lives in Toronto and works in private equity. She would often write Tiger Hills after work, often deep into the night. It took Sarita five years, and seven drafts, to write her first novel, and the result, according to Book List, is a "...spellbinding epic."
