A hybrid of War of the worlds and Night of the living dead, chronicles the struggle of a small group of survivors forced to contend with a world torn apart by a deadly disease.

McMillan Palgrave
A bastard hybrid of War of the Worlds and Night of the Living Dead, Autumn chronicles the struggle of a small group of survivors forced to contend with a world torn apart by a deadly disease. After 99% of the population of the planet is killed in less than 24 hours, for the very few who have managed to stay alive, things are about to get much worse. Animated by "phase two" of some unknown contagion, the dead begin to rise. At first slow, blind, dumb and lumbering, quickly the bodies regain their most basic senses and abilities... sight, hearing, locomotion... As well as the instinct toward aggression and violence. Held back only by the restraints of their rapidly decomposing flesh, the dead seem to have only one single goal - to lumber forth and destroy the sole remaining attraction in the silent, lifeless world: those who have survived the plague, who now find themselves outnumbered 1,000,000 to 1...

Without ever using the 'Z' word, Autumn offers a new perspective on the traditional zombie story. There's no flesh eating, no fast-moving corpses, no gore for gore's sake. Combining the atmosphere and tone of George Romero's classic living dead films with the attitude and awareness of 28 Days (and Weeks) later, this horrifying and suspenseful novel is filled with relentless cold, dark fear.

From the author of the Hater trilogy... A new series of zombies and the apocalypse... In less than twenty-four hours a vicious and virulent disease will destroy virtually the entire population of the Earth. And that's before things get really bad...

Coarse Language: Lots of "f-bombs". Bear in mind that the author is from the UK, so swearing is not as big a deal.

Violence: Fighting off dead people. Details of mutilated corpses. There are scenes where the zombies attack survivors.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Some of the descriptions of the dead or carnage may be tough for some people. I am a big zombie movie / game / book fan, so it does not phase me. I found it mild compared to other zombie media I have enjoyed.

The book was literally "OK". Not scary in the least. I am a huge fan of zombies, so maybe I am just getting desensitized to them. I had heard good things about the series and expected more. I am currently reading "Autumn: The City". Maybe it will be better. Fast read, and there were parts where I did not want to put it down, but was quite predictable.

As the commenter below said, this is NOT a fast paced story with lots of action. The psychology of the characters is the focus. This creates characters that the reader become easily attached to and makes putting the book down a difficult task.

Great start to a series (the rest of which is coming in 2011). The story is based around the old fashioned, slow moving zombie and, although you'd think this would make things boring, it's surprisingly interesting. Don't expect much action though, this is a more emotionally focused tale following three survivors making the best of their situation.

Boiler-plate zombie apocalypse book. The entire population dies except for a small minority of those who are apparently immune to whatever caused the mass death. Several survivors find eachother and hole-up in an abandoned community center. While there, the dead start to re-animate. Three of the survivors decide to leave the group and take their cahnces elsewhere. As the days go by, more and more of the dead come back to life and they get more aggressive by the day. Who, if anybody, will survive?
