This movie was surprisingly faithful to the book in the storyline. However, much of the book is about what goes on in Liz's head and, although some of that comes through, most of it doesn't. The book has some lovely passages, especially in the Italian section, about the place and importance of pleasure in life and these didn't make it to the screen. This movie is perhaps a rare case of it being more interesting if you have already read the book. By reading the book, you get the details about her motivation and her psychological and emotional journey. This background gives the movie some depth, makes it much more interesting and is probably why I enjoyed it more than some of the other reviewers did. Without it, the movie is just an entertaining romance story - but still a nice movie.

I haven't read the book and after seeing this shallow vapid movie I have no interest. It is like junk food, mildly satisfying at the time and later you forget all about it. Julia Roberts is one of the most overrated peoople in movies.

this movie was already returned.

I personally think Julia Roberts is a great actress, but holes of deleted scenes and dialog between her leaving her husband does not make sense. ok, she lost her passion for him, but why? i believe it's a nice love story that true love hurts your feelings by telling you the naked truth about yourself, but in the end that is the man she truly loves her that refuses to bow to her demands. Lastly, I love the different locations filed....but the writing lacked vivid details of all character of her husband and herself. in conclusion, this movie is an important warning not to live a shallow life but a wholesome one!

Very dissapointed... Julia Roberts is a great actress but this movie didn't do it for her... Great scenery though and loved the romance between the two main caracthers but besides that... Didn't enjoy it at all.

Julia does a good job, and the part of the film in Bali is really beautiful. It is a bit long, and some scenes drag. But it is pretty good, it is a romance novel film wrapped in self actualization/empowerment. And it ends with true love, like any good romancer. At 2.5 hours it deserves some credit for being entertaining, more or less, for that long.

I'll bet this would make a great book to read and then to discuss. But to watch as a movie, the way it was done was awful. I hated it. It took me four days to watch it. There were good parts, of course, and I enjoyed elements of the movie - Julia Roberts not being one of them. I am finding her harder and harder to watch as the years go on. The other actors were all wonderful. I just find it a bit sad that to be happy the character HAD to hook up someone. I guess that's the main way we think of "love" but that aspect of the title could have been treated so differently. How about love yourself? Love life? Love others? Really, a great book I'm sensing and will see if I can find it in hard copy.
