In a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature, Elisabeth Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her uncommon encounter with a Neohelix albolabris —a common woodland snail.
While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater under standing of her own confined place in the world.
Intrigued by the snail’s molluscan anatomy, cryptic defenses, clear decision making, hydraulic locomotion, and mysterious courtship activities, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer, providing a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal.
Told with wit and grace, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence and provides an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive.
Baker & Taylor
Bedridden and suffering from a neurological disorder, the author recounts the profound effect on her life caused by a gift of a snail in a potted plant and shares the lessons learned from her new companion about her the meaning of her life and the life of the small creature.

Comment
Add a CommentBeautifully written, this book reads like poetry. An ode to the common woodland snail, it elevates the slimy little suckers to a whole new, oddly poignant, level.
A remarkable little work of non-fiction that reminds us of the inspirational wonders of nature without anthropomorphizing or being too sentimental. Take the time to read it, at a snail's pace.
Bailey weaves the story of her illness and subsequent snail watching with snippets of snail biology, winsome passages from 19th century naturalists, up to date science and poetry devoted to the snail into an charming utterly charming book. A meditation on her gastropod companion's behavior becomes a revealation on long term illness and fatigue. I would recommend this book to anyone: -interested in snails (obviously) or in the observation of animals -dealing with illness, fatigue or helplessness -trying to understand someone with those conditions -looking for hope, encouragement or comfort -looking for a good read I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This little memoir is crammed with astonishing mollusk facts as well as detailed observations of an incredible creature’s daily routine. Did you know that a snail can skip? NPR interview with author Elisabeth Tova Bailey: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129475625
