I really liked this book from the start. It starts off rather hot and mysterious. I was immediately intrigued and thought that Luce might be a serial killer. Pretty spooky. The novel does have a whole lot of teen angst, but she is 17. I liked the myth of the angels and the fallen. I thought it was intriguing. The whole scene with Cam and Luce in the graveyard with the snake and the apple....I really liked. I am looking forward to the next book, but I hope there is more development in the relationships and that this is not some Twilight nightmare. I want Luce to get stronger, too. I am getting a bit sick of the whole, "He's so beautiful!" and the girl is terrified to look at herself in the mirror because she can't measure up...ugh. While I am making demands, give me more of Arriane, too. Her kind of spunkiness and strength (think the shocks) I can really admire.

don't even bother reading the 4th book its a waste of time.

The book was disappointing. There's obviously something there of merit but it's execution left a lot to be desired. One thing that really bugged me was how Luce would end up looking back in retrospect about something that didn't play out later in the story - for three to six paragraphs. Meaning feelings, things w/ Trevor, some childhood experience, etc. I'm not saying these things are bad, they just didn't contribute anything to Luce's character or the story, and they certainly didn't need to go on for as long as they did. There's also the matter of the introduction of all these characters yet the author rarely utilizes them. The main focus is on Luce and Daniel, a few scenes with Penn and Cam, and occasionally Molly, Arriane and Roland - and some of these characters became props for Luce and Daniel scenes. *Spoilers* I also found the author a bit misleading when it came to things at the ending. I immediately got that Cam was either disturbed or a psychopath from the start, but somehow him being a fallen angel meant to tear Luce and Daniel apart? I mean, I had considered it as a possibility, but it wasn't in line with the few hints that were being dropped as to his true character. It's established from the start that everyone at Sword and Cross has baggage - reasons for being there. His reasons for being their alluded to him being a potential rapist (Arriane refers to him as "Chester the Molester" and Gabbe says that Cam might've messed with the figs he offered Luce). When Luce absently thinks of wanting to see Cam's file, I started wondering if this would later play out in some way or that his true nature would be revealed (i.e. he has a history with "no means no"). But this was only a prop to compare how easy Cam is to read in comparison to Daniel. But besides all that, the book is mostly wasted detail and loopholes. The author just didn't fully utilize what she had and instead thought to focus on some superficial relationship that transcends time between an angel and a human. It's ridiculous. This connection is glorified yet it's a relationship between a perpetual 17 year old girl and an ancient fallen angel. The "love" they experience is more like a spell with the "heat" they experience and the "shocks" they endure given that this is something they experience every century they meet. Unless we're talking soul mates here.....

I've read all the books from the Fallen series, and by far Fallen is the biggest let down. I'm not even really sure why I continued to read the series, but I'm actually quite glad I did. If you're into romance / fallen angel books, then you might enjoy this series.

After a devastating fire, Luce is pulled out of her high-achieving prep school and deposited within the rusted gates of Sword and Cross reform school in Georgia. Really you would think her parents would have checked the place out first. I found it hard to believe any parent would allow their kids to attend a run down creepy school like this. Though plagued by visions of lurking shadows and the unexplained death of her classmate, Luce starts making both friends and enemies and drawing the attention (both good and bad) of two guys. Despite his cold behavior, Luce is inexplicably drawn to Daniel, and she slowly finds herself on a path of discovery about her past and her potentially devastating futureLucinda Price is a seventeen-year-old girl from Georgia. She previously attended a private school in New Hampshire before the court ordered her be moved to a boarding school for troubled youth, after an incident left her alive, but her boyfriend Trevor dead. When she first enters Sword & Cross, she realizes how much her life will change. There are cameras watching her every move and there is a strict rule regarding cell phones. On her first day, she meets Arriane Alter, an excitable and enigmatic girl who immediately takes a liking to Luce. She shows her fondness by asking Luce to cut her hair just like Luce's, much to Luce's dismay for she does not want to mess her hair up. Also on her first day at Sword & Cross, Luce finds herself meeting the handsome Cam Briel and being drawn to the fascinating Daniel Grigori, who seems to have mixed feelings for her when he smiles and then flips her off. During the first day, she also meets Penn, the daughter of the now deceased caretaker. Luce also makes enemies with Molly, an angry girl with multiple facial piercings. and feels as if Daniel is familiar. Luce falls in love with Daniel, and with the help of Penn and the librarian she uncovers a secret Daniel has been keeping from her - she's reincarnates every lifetime after meeting him, whom she also discovers is an angel, as well as many of the other school kids. There is an angel fight at the end, where the librarian is found to be evil and murders Penn and tries to kill Luce but Daniel saves her. Cam is actually a demon and fights against Daniel in the battle.
