Oh god, this book. I have to say, for the first couple of issues I wasn't really feeling it. It's sort of strange and even a little off-putting at first. But by the end, I was literally crying, in public, on the subway, and didn't even care who saw me. No spoilers, but the last third of this book is gorgeous and heartbreaking. A must-read.

Such an awesome book. Really interesting story, with some great artwork (Who says you need color to draw epic spreads?). One of my favorite graphic novels, and I've read a ton!

Guys!I didn't finish this one yet but I can already say this: it's marvelous mind-blowing story! The graphic style will of course remind the manga style, I though myself a lot to Infinite Kung Fu [McLeod, Kagan] But the stunning use of black and white is unique. Just open this book and let yourself be sucked in it.

A smart-alecky fifth-grader who loves Dungeons and dragons and already has a career killing giants. She doesn't care about boys and is apathetic to the people surrounding her. Where has this graphic novel been all my life? It's engaging smart and funny.

Barbara Thorson is not a typical Grade 5 student. She is tougher than Emily Strange and cares nothing about schoolwork, boys, dating, clothes - or anything that distracts her from her task, which is to be prepared to kill giants. She is fearless when faced with school bullies; her enemy is much greater than that. Over time, Barbara learns that she doesn't have to be alone in her struggles and that it is okay to accept help with life's demons. Ken Niimura's black and white inkwash art is a good pair with Joe Kelly's text. The atmosphere is of looming menace. At times, it isn't easy to discern what is happening - which is a reflection of the troubled workings in Barbara's mind. Grade 7 to adult.
