Mon-El is a truly great hero and probably the only one braver and more powerful than superman himself. Left on earth to fill supermans role while he spends time with his newly freed kryptonian family Mon-El is the only individual worthy of the job. I love Mon-El and I love his story just as much. You get to know Mon-El in a very intimate way and see him deal with true internal struggle any person can identify with.

Fourth volume in the New Krypton series, this finds Superman elevated in rank after an assassination attempt on Zod, trying to figure out the reasons for the attack and other cases. It's a different take on Superman, requiring him to confront his own expectations of the world he lives in and the way other Kryptonians think. It also brings in guest stars from other space faring races. The art is well suited to the epic, sweeping scope of the story, and it's a shame DC didn't try to carry on with the direction they had taken the character in.

For a time there was a significant shift in the Superman side of the DC Universe, with Clark off Earth, living on New Krypton, a new world created by the survivors of a remnant of the old Krypton, with his enemy Zod in charge of the military. This volume is in the midst of all that, with Superman becoming an officer under Zod, trying to negotiate his way in a world that's vastly changing as time goes along, dealing with internal struggles and intrigue. Not to mention that everyone else on the planet has his powers too. It requires compromises and a new outlook for the character, so from the story point of view, it's a different take, and a welcome one on a character who's so often a boring sort of person. Unfortunately the extended New Krypton status ended with a return to the status quo in what would be collected as War of the Supermen.
