HARPERCOLL

On the eve of the monsoons, in a remote Indian village, Kavita gives birth to a baby girl. But in a culture that favors sons, the only way for Kavita to save her newborn daughter's life is to give her away. It is a decision that will haunt her and her husband for the rest of their lives, even after the arrival of their cherished son.

Halfway around the globe, Somer, an American doctor, decides to adopt a child after making the wrenching discovery that she will never have one of her own. When she and her husband, Krishnan, see a photo of the baby with the gold-flecked eyes from a Mumbai orphanage, they are overwhelmed with emotion. Somer knows life will change with the adoption but is convinced that the love they already feel will overcome all obstacles.

Interweaving the stories of Kavita, Somer, and the child that binds both of their destinies, Secret Daughter poignantly explores the emotional terrain of motherhood, loss, identity, and love, as witnessed through the lives of two families?one Indian, one American?and the child that indelibly connects them.

Secret Daughter is a great book.. perfect for ages 13+ and is great for all mothers.. make you really think back and relate. The story takes place in india, and is about a young mother names Kavita who finally has a baby girl but is forced to give her away due to certain costums in India. The baby girl is dropped at an orphange. On the other side of the globe, Somer, in the us, is having trouble having a child so her husband krishnan thinks about adopting a child form India... will kavitas baby girl have a connection with somer and krishnans adoption? read to find out :)

I found this book to be contrived and superficial. I wasn't endeared to any of the characters. The writing was decent and for a first novel, decent. I wanted to like this book more.

Secret Daughter, set in two countries which have a very different feel, tells a story of two families bound by adoption. Kavita courageously walks from her village to leave her day old daughter at an orphanage in Mumbai – to save her life from being snuffed out by her husband who wants a son. Somer travels with her husband Kris to India to bring their adopted daughter Asha back to her new life in California. Somer’s disconnect with her husband’s country, culture and family is very obvious, and possibly the reason why the Thakars do not visit India as a family for many years. The reader follows the parallel lives of the physician couple in America and the struggles of Kavita and her husband who migrate to Mumbai in search of a better life which begins in Asia largest slum Dharavi. 20-years later Asha travels to India on a journalism scholarship, both fearful and eager to learn of her roots. The reader gets a peephole into Indian culture and looks through Asha’s eyes as she makes better sense of the meaning of family. Reviewed by KB

Good story, but not particularly well written. It's an interesting story, but I disliked the way the writer wrote at times and wasn't too impressed with the way the author used present tense.

The story was good, but the book was not really well-written. Worth a read though as it is a good story.

Interesting story and sad at times. The search for the birth parents seemed a bit of a stretch.

Definitely over-rated. Narrative dragged and I found this book wholly unsatisfactory.
