The death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family—including Judd’s mother, brothers, and sister—have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd’s wife, Jen, whose fourteen-month affair with Judd’s radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public.

Simultaneously mourning the death of his father and the demise of his marriage, Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch’s dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together. In the same house. Like a family.

As the week quickly spins out of control, longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed, and old passions reawakened. For Judd, it’s a weeklong attempt to make sense of the mess his life has become while trying in vain not to get sucked into the regressive battles of his madly dysfunctional family. All of which would be hard enough without the bomb Jen dropped the day Judd’s father died: She’s pregnant.

This Is Where I Leave You is Jonathan Tropper's most accomplished work to date, a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind—whether we like it or not.

Loved this book and all the quirky characters and family drama. Had lots of laugh-out-loud ,moments in public spaces and I don't feel the least embarrassed by any of them! Can't wait to watch the movie - I hope it doesn't disappoint.

(this is my review i wrote on goodreads) so, I'm not sure what other people expected. I see several 2 and 3 stars on this book, and I wonder why. this book is what it is, a week in the lives of a family that has drifted their own ways and is forced back to face all the crap that drove them there in the first place.
I found myself laughing aloud and reading passages aloud to my family (husband and two daughters, 15 and 17) and them laughing.
I only found this book because of an upcoming movie review, and I'm happy I did. it reminded me that everyone's family has crap that drives them apart, and it sucks that it usually takes someone's death or serious injury to bring them back to their senses.
that said, I usually prefer endings wrapped up with a bow, but I was OK with this one being a bit open. we were only promised a week in these people's lives and that's what we got

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of the best I've read in a while. It was both heart-breakingly honest and laugh out loud funny. I highly recommend it!

It's a little slow, but enjoyable. It's got a Neil Simon feel to it...Jewish family of 4 adult children and their wanna-be young mother sit shiva for their deceased dad. This family hasn't been close for years so this makes for an interesting situation. It's being made into a movie currently...I am interesting to see who plays which personality.

Brilliant! Excellent book. Well balanced between funny and touching without getting too cheesy. This family is certainly dysfunctional but hilarious! Highly recommended.
