Whether or not you have a dog you will immediately feel welcome in Dean Koontz’s memoir about Trixie, his golden retriever.

Trixie is not just a cuddly retired service pooch who can issue a “sotto voce woof.” She is a genuine angel with a soft spot for lounging on rafts (“I’m moving through water! Without swimming! Brilliant!”), the word ‘nachos’ and pranks galore (including the bucket-bottom move).

Before you have a chance to jump into this book, it will leap into you.

Favorite quote?

“This may be the primary purpose of dogs: to restore our sense of wonder and to help us maintain it, to make us consider that we should trust our intuition as they trust theirs, and to help us realize that a thing known intuitively can be as real as anything known by material experience.”

This is the story of Trixie Koontz, the beautiful, smart, funny, and generally awesome dog belonging to well known author, Dean Koontz. All these years, I’ve heard about Trixie, but I didn’t realize just how special she was until I read this book. That dog was great at calming other dogs down in the middle of a vet hospital visit. She refused to throw up on a hard-to-clean carpet. She was a perceptive dog who knew when on the tennis ball hunt that one had been left behind.

This was an amazing story of an amazing dog. I laughed out loud until I cried. And then I cried so hard I sobbed. A truly wonderful book that any dog lover should read. Even if you’re not a Dean Koontz fan, you’ll love this book, and you’ll hopefully come to realize (if you haven’t already) just how special dogs really are. Especially dogs like Trixie Koontz.

The line editor must have been on holiday when this book was prepared for print! Some sentences have to be read two or three times to get the meaning. Something I found irritating was Koontz's tendency to go back and forth in Trixie's life, instead of chronologically. That said, she really was a smart and affectionate dog, and the book is, as the subtitle suggests, "A Memoir of a Joyful Dog."

What a fantastic insight into the life of one of my all-time favourite authors and the special bond he and his wife shared with their beloved Trixie. She was an incredible dog, and as both a Koontz fan and dog-lover, this wonderful memoir had me both laughing and crying right through. I'm sure all who read this will wish that Trixie could have lived forever.

Dean Koontz can make you feel all the emotions he's feeling. If you've lived with pets of any kind in your home, you know exactly how he feels. Such a wonderful insight into just how much they really loved Trixie.

I've never read a Dean Koontz novel in my life, but this memoir of his lovely dog made me laugh AND cry. I am not a dog owner, but I want one like Trixie!

Trixie's story and spirit will stay with you long after you finished reading the book. I had to re-read the entire book and then, re-read parts of it. Both the book and book CD are fantastic, a must read!
