Lillian is his wife—beautiful, southern-bred, with a core of velvet steel. Without her cool head, her kids would be in real trouble. Ben is the oldest, a born athlete whose best never satisfies the big man. Ben’s got to stand up, even fight back, against a father who doesn’t give in—not to his men, not to his wife, and certainly not to his son. Bull Meecham is undoubtedly Pat Conroy’s most explosive character—a man you should hate, but a man you will love.

Add a CommentIf/when I'm asked for my list of best books ever read, this is always in the top few. Based on the author's family home life with a madly military father & dependent mother. Moving in every way, frightening, sad, funny, seemingly endless waiting for the next crackpot set of orders from father. Very highly recommended.
If someone’s still writing good books, works of fiction that grab you, this still isn’t it. After wading through pages of inane, juvenile dialogue by page 70 I’m into horseplay and assorted stupidity. I don’t want to read this. I’m sure there’s an audience for this stuff, but it ain’t me.
