This is the second book in the Mortal Instruments series that began with the City of Bones. We rejoin Clary Fray in New York City as she still tries to find a way to release her mother from the coma she is in. Clary has discovered that she is a Shadowhunter, although she still needs training to be good at it. Clary struggles with her feelings for Jace, her newfound brother, and tries to be closer to her friend Simon. She is staying with Luke, a friend of her mother's and a man who has been a father to her. Meanwhile, her real father, Valentine is busy trying to muster an army of demons to defeat the Clave and become the most powerful man on earth. Can Clary and Jace stop him? When he obtains the second Mortal Instrument, the Sword of Souls, they realize what he is trying to do and work to figure out his location and plan to keep their loved ones safe. Seeing into the world of vampires, werewolves, and fairies, keeps this story fresh. We see how the Downworlders and the Shadowhunters must work together to defeat this enemy that threatens them both. A good read, with lots going on, and new developments for Simon, Jace, and Clary.

Another success for Cassandra Clare! I am thoroughly enjoying the continuing story and am sure I'm going to feel sad and empty when I finish City of Glass - it'll be a long wait until Clockwork Angel's sequel comes out. I love the story line of Clary and Jace (but especially Clary) being extra special shadowhunters. I hated the story line of Simon becoming a vampire, but then he drank Jace's blood and suddenly he's out in the sun again - all the pros of being a vampire, but none of the cons (well not the most important one). I hope he keeps the ability, but doesn't have to keep drinking special shadowhunter blood (that could be a bit inconvenient, unless he ends up permanently with Clary).

This book was good in fighting and suspence, but I was bummed by the lack of romance... Still good to read. 1st and 3rd books are the best.

I am absolutely in love with this series. Wonderfully creative and BELIEVABLE! City of Ashes was not as good as City of Bones, though. A little slower and less exciting, but wonderful nonetheless. Plus, Jace and Simon are both hilarious.

I couldn't put this book down. It's a great sequel to City Of Bones, you could even say it's better. It has its problems, but those are things you can get pass because the story just absorbs you completely. There was a lot of action and suspense with this one, but it was equally amazing. I can't wait to read City Of Glass!

“He clung to her more tightly, knotting his hands in her hair, trying to tell her, with the press of his mouth on hers, all the things he could never say out loud: I love you; I love you and I don’t care that you’re my sister; don’t be with him, don’t want him, don’t go with him. Be with me. Want me. Stay with me. I don’t know how to be without you." - Jace Wayland”
