On his third attempt, he is elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, the first openly-gay man to be elected to public office in the United States. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, are shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blames his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board. Summary
Add a SummaryHeavily overrated documentary. This is where a small minority with political axes to grind can pass off terrible acting and a horrid story as a best picture. So many movies were more deserving of awards... We are bombarded with these political correct movies ad nauseam. Att is sacrificed on the altar of political propaganda and Hollywood money.

Add a Comment"News flash" former leader of Poland just made an anti-gay comment?
I had seen the documentary “The Times of Harvey Milk” prior to watching the Hollywood version. Both films do a good job at telling the story of the people and events that were central to Milk’s life, and I would recommend watching either one.
A bit preachy but the performances, particularly Penn and Brolin, are outstanding.
Very moving story, very well done getting the message across.

Inspirational. Being a Canadian, I hear a lot of what goes on in the states, more so over my own Government and yet I've never heard the story of Harvey Milk. If I wasn't so resistant to crying, I would of teared up during this film. It was beautiful.
wonderful film! I'm not much into politics and all, but this movie has a powerful messega behind it.
Not a fan of Sean Penn, I was pleasantly surprized at this gem of a movie. Penn is superb. And all of the cast seem to be enjoying themselves. It is excellently done.
A great movie with a powerful message and superb acting by the cast.
Ernest & sympathetic recounting of a critical time & a pivotal figure in the San Francisco gay rights movement. But I reacted even more strongly to ocleirigh's 2009 comments, which I only discovered when I logged onto BiblioCommons to record my review. It's hard to fathom that someone in modern-day Oakville would be using the library's interactive catalogue as a platform to promote anti-gay hatred & that no one complained about it until now. (I'll be logging an objection with the system's administrators immediately.)
