I do love writer Richard Curtis. He captures the everyman living an ordinary life better than anyone else I know. This story centers on -- who else? -- Hugh Grant's character and how his life is turned upside down when his path intersects with big-time movie star Anna Scott, played by Julia Roberts. Without the superb writing behind it, NOTTING HILL could be formulaic, but with a stellar script, it hits its mark. One of the best scenes is when Anna is rehearsing her lines on the roof with William. Nothing encapsulates the natural back-and-forth better than that. It's not a mind-blowing film, but for what it is, I recommend NOTTING HILL.

... THERE IS ONE SCENE IN THIS MOVIE, IN PARTICULAR, where we see what a truly wonderful actress JuliaRoberts actually is; she is someone who has never quite or completely won me over... but, in the bookshop scene, after she and the the HughGrant character have had a disagreement and his feelings have been hurt as a result, when she states that "she's just a girl asking to be loved" , that her talent and skill as an actress shine-through. Her control of the "word" and her imparting of restrained emotion on the brink of breaking are worth the watching of this movie. No doubt about it, she's a pro.

Cute premise, decent acting, good wit, a nice rom-com.

A fairy tale male wish-fulfillment story that was admittedly fairly entertaining. It sure felt pretty calculated to push all the right buttons, but hell, I guess sometimes a well done "pop song" can be as fun as something with more artistic merit too.

Anna Scott: After all... I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.

Every man’s dream comes true for William Thacker, an unsuccessful Notting Hill bookstore owner, when Anna Scott, the world’s most beautiful woman and best-liked actress, enters his shop. A little later, he still can’t believe it himself, William runs into her again – this time spilling orange juice over her. Anna accepts his offer to change in his nearby apartment, and thanks him with a kiss, which seems to surprise her even more than him. Eventually, Anna and William get to know each other better over the months, but being together with the world’s most wanted woman is not easy – neither around your closest friends, nor in front of the all-devouring press.
