This is probably my all time favorite period drama EVER! Pride and Prejudice - Victorian Era. Based on an Elizabeth Gaskell novel, it is a sweeping love story that is also gorgeously filmed and acted. Stars the amazing Richard Armitage. The last scene will have you swooning and hitting the rewind... Read More »

I do love period dramas. Really well casted! I wish the ending was a bit extended. Would've liked to see what became of the mill and if there had been any changes with regards to the workers' wages. I did not really care for the too-many deaths though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The acting was superb. The chemistry between the actors was lovely. The set, costume, etc was great. It showed the grittiness of the Victorian manufacturing industry well. Although the script deviates from the book in several places, I thought that it enhances the intentions of the author. Well, worth a watch!

This is one of my all-time favourite stories. I've watched it many times and still love it.The BBC production is wonderful, with excellent actors, beautiful music (Martin Phipps), and lovely sets. Since I had seen this miniseries before reading the book, I had the pleasure of visualizing the characters as I read. The book, of course, is superior in developing the characters.
Richard Armitage does an excellent job playing John Thornton. I particularly loved the scene when Margaret leaves the mill yard.
The many social issues of poverty/wealth, master-worker, educated/illiterate, industrialized/agricultural were all explored thoughtfully.

Very enjoyable, well-rounded story of a young woman who moves with her parents from southern England to the industrial North, where she encounters the plight of the mill workers, the master-worker struggle (including strikes), and a tumultuous acquaintance with one of the mill owners. Might be compared to Pride & Prejudice, but more up-front (less social dancing around, more overt confrontation when it arises), or maybe Dickens or Jane Eyre, but not as miserable ;P Social commentary with a good romantic angle that doesn't overshadow the rest of the story.

bad disc... Needs to be taken out of circulation. Last two chapters are digitally damaged. So, you spend hours watching the story only to be "locked out" of the ending!!!!

"How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell, and it's white, it's snow-white."
