Harlem, a Coretta Scott King Award winning book, by Walter Dean Myers, and illustrated by his son Christopher Myers is an excellent book to read to your children or students during Black History Month or when you are introducing poetry to your class. The book takes you on a journey rich in African American culture and history. Walter Dean Myers uses poetry to write this book, which is an excellent way to express the history of Harlem.

“Harlem was a promise
Of a better life,
of a place where a man
Didn’t have to know his place
Simply because
He was Black”

“We hope
We pray
Our black skins
Reflecting the face of God
In storefront temples”
