The reproductions of Lichtenstein's cartoon-inspired art works are the immediate draw of this book for many youngsters, but the extensively researched text also provides older youths with insights into how a child who loves art becomes a mature working artist (including schooling, shows, jobs, setbacks, breakthroughs, and historical and contemporary inspirations). Rubin has also written books of comparable depth on artists Thiebaud, Warhol, Hopper, and O'Keeffe, but this one on Lichtenstein has the most "curb appeal."
